Decode 1971 Dodge Challenger BB 4spd Export build sheet - 12/23/07 04:50 PM
Hello all and I appreciate any help I can get.
Here is the deal I tried to get Galen to do this almost two years ago, and after several phone calls and e-mails later I never got a response.
I decided I'd let you guys have a crack at it...
I realize R-bodies are not falling from the sky, however is this car fairly rare? I know it has some really cool options...
My dad bought this 1971 Dodge Challenger 383 4-speed car in 1985 from a local guy. At my father was driving a 1972 Challenger 340 which he sold to afford this car. The purchase price was $1,000.00
The story begins that a gentleman wanted a bright green Challenger and couldn't find one in the area. Supposedly the dealers found him one, but it was in Detroit, MI (8 hrs. away). It would be cooler if it turned out to come from Chicago, he, he, he...
Anyways they guy bought it new and said it was a rep car or something. He then sold it to the second owner which is the guy my father bought it from.
It was already a maroon when my father bought it but still had the original vinyl top (which was removed immediately). He also immediately repainted the car (a maroon/candy apple red color), pulled out the original 383 (which had the original exhaust, valve covers, intake, and carb removed) & installed a 340 and started driving it everywhere. The original engine is still under his friends work bench. My dad didn't want it anymore and was gonna toss it out when his buddy said, you never know, you may want it later on so I'll store it for you.
I do not have any other information other than this.
Here is the car shortly after purchase with fresh paint:
It does have the correct markings on the build sheet for an export vehicle U/C/I = I. It also has "E" infront of the order number. It also looks to have the 'kilo' speedometer marked off and the 'export label' marked off at the bottom of the sheet in the 'X' options section.
The numbers 2294 (looks to be anyways) are marked at the bottom of the sheet. Any idea if this means anything?
I also read in a book somewhere that the front spoiler code (J-78?) also dubbed for some type of export code as well. There were no front spoilers on the car when my father purchased the car.
I apologize for the picture size, but feel it is necessary in this instance.
Here is the build sheet:
He had this sheet kept in a book and it was getting moved around quite a bit when I was a kid. I took it to school one day and laminated it for him. I was Mopar wise even 20 years ago!
I wish there was a way to find out the actual full story on the car and how it is still in the states and where it came from and such...
