1970 RR 4-speed Hurst lever questions - 05/01/10 03:24 PM

This is the stick and ball that was in my 70 RR E63/D21 383/4-speed when I bought it in 1982. The ball is plain white (now yellowed) no markings, no part numbers, screwed onto the stick. The stick is marked 4078 maybe 4079. Questions:
1. Were all D21 4-speeds pistol grips?
2. Is the build sheet J42 'Pistol Grip Trans Knob' ever marked? Mine is blank (1970Chargerregistry has them all blank as well).
3. Is this a 1969 part? A 3-speed part? Is the ball Mopar? Could this be correct?

2. Is the build sheet J42 'Pistol Grip Trans Knob' ever marked? Mine is blank (1970Chargerregistry has them all blank as well). NO
3. Is this a 1969 part? NO A 3-speed part? NO Is the ball Mopar? ?? Could this be correct? possibly '64-'65

Pictured lever looks like an "over-the-counter" HURST lever, possibly came with a new shifter purchased aftermarket. It resembles the 4-speed '64-'65 b-body unit, but I'm not sure if it is factory.

The 4078 handle was the aftermarket handle used with their Competition Plus shifter. Also the 70 RR used the Pistol grip which had a slide-in fitting rather than the (2) bolts...

Just my $0.01..

the two bolt holes is a dead giveaway, NOT the correct 70 shifter, should be a slide pistol grip, I agree on the earlier B body application. Rich

Great call guys. I'm so used to seeing the two hole style it never dawned on me anything else existed. Went out and scrubbed the shifter and took a poor picture...Hurst Competition Plus! Now I'm left to wonder why....everything else on the car was stock, even the 14" road wheels and AM radio.
Thanks!

Can I Hijack here ..

Im in need of info in the same area to..

I'm building the sbird and i have been trying to put something together that will work and yes i know the PG and box needs to be a stab in..

Here what i got

I have a GP for a console but it has the two bolt holes in it ( what app is it for )

Now the box i have is what i can find goes to 70-71 e-body BUT it looks to be a stab in handle ..is that right ? Thought by that point they where all bolt in handle..

I have a set of shifting rods from a 69 charger .. I know i will have to drill out the tabs to fit the rod .. we are not useing the lock out thing ...

We do not have a console in the car right now .. So do you think if i fit this all together will it work ? and will it shift with out the PG hitting the dash ?

Thanks

Changing the sloppy stock Hurst shifter mmechanisme was standard operating procedure for anyone who wanted to have a faster shift. The pistol grip was not as bad as the shifter in the 69's. I used to hit my knuckles on the dash evrytime I hit 3rd! I switched mine to a Competition Plus because it has a positive stop (adjustable bolt) for the throw of the shifts. You can take a stock pistol grip and drill it to bolt into the Competition Plus shifter. That way you maintain the stock appearance with an upgraded shifter mechanism. I would definitely keep the shifter and change the handle.

If the shifter gate is fine, and you want the original look..
Pick up a later Hurst repro handle/pistol grip lever they are about $200 for the non-console version, and does have the (2) bolt holes..

Just my $0.01..
