aluminum reanodizing question

aluminum reanodizing question - 02/26/10 03:54 AM

I have some parts i would like to get reanodized. the problem is stripping the original anodizing off so i can metal finish and polish. I have tried a few junk pieces in the lye bath but feel that the acid may have an ill affect on the new anodizing. I have heard that blasting with 240 grit or finer aluminum oxide also works well. Just looking for people that have stripped parts themselves and had reanodized with good luck

I though the places that do anodizing will also strip anodizing off.

From an industrial setting, I know I had parts that were not plated correctly and I sent them back to get striped and re-plated. I've even had parts striped and sent back to stock unplated, under an unplated part number of course.

yes they can. Unfortunately i don't think it would be very cheap to send a huge box of trim half way across the u.s. to get stripped, sent back for me to metal finish and polish, then repeated.

You need to find a local anodizing place. There should be lots in MI. A majority of metal parts get some sort of plating or surface treatment.

The problem in MI is most places have automated lines for mass production. the several i have talked with will do it but won't guarantee you even get your parts back. It needs to be a place that does it all by hand

You need a small run type place. Because of aerospace out here, they might be used to running small batches. I know we did 20 pcs runs of small electrical connector pieces.

Maybe search thomas registry online: http://www.thomasnet.com/

Here's a quick search I just did: http://www.thomasnet.com/nsearch.html?cov=MI&which=prod&what=plating&heading=61511754

There is a place in Indiana called Classic Metal Finishing, I just recieved my 69 charger grill trim back from being polished and reanodized and I won't send any other trim anywhere else but there. Mark is a great guy to work with and a straight shooter with reasonable rates for top notch work! Mark can be reached at (personal cell # removed at request of Mark...please use the email address) or info@classicmetalfinishing.net

I believe the original poster want to straighten and polish the piece himself. He just wants a place that will remove and the re-anodize the part. I believe most of these trim restorers do not do the anodizing in house.

I think Mike at All Trim does remove anodizing in house for his own business?

Ok, I remember he at least removed in house. Wasn't for sure about the rest.

IIRC, he was the one that suggested having the anodizing professionally removed.

I think I've got almost a big enough load to consider this myself. ~10 rocker panel and ~10 wide trunk trims, ~10 headlight bezels and ~40 1-2 foot peices from various cars and cars in the family. And probably under estimating. Wonder what that would cost?

I need to search around So Cal to find a shop willing to do it.

Nah, the ano strip is the cheapest part of aluminum trim restoration.

What would be a price range to shoot for? I have a feeling price will be all over the place. I'm sure I'll get my share of, "I don't want to be bothered, so here a rediculous number so you'll go away" prices.

I'd guess the removal will be about the same price as having the anodizing removed and put back on at the same time. I'm thinking that since a good part of the price is the labor racking and fixturing the parts for the dip baths.

The places we have around here that plate gold/silver anodizing and black phosphate for bolts and nuts should be able to remove this aluminum anodizing, correct??

I am going to throw my 2 cents in if you are not set up to do the job you are asking about you will be money and time ahead to send the part or parts you are wanting stripped and or restored to someone that is in the buisness and that is all they do. You will spend more money and time trying to do it yourself. I suggest you send your parts to Mark he is on here and he will do the best job for you. This is just what I think. Ket the pros do there job.

Some of the stuff I can tackle and some I can't. The stuff I choose to do may look 80% or 90% of the upper level pros, but that's what my budget allows. And the level may be perfectly appropriate for the car at hand.

I don't think all or even many of the professional trim restorers do anodizing removal and plating in house (All Trim is one). So many of the pros are going to outsource this processing to other pros.

If you don't have a boring bore should you not qualified to assemble and engine?

And some of the pros only do part of the process, they will outsource the polishing, straightening and/or detail painting too. Sometimes that depends on the part or workload. I can think of one in particular, but is not mentioned here.

I'm pretty sure All Trim and MrBelevedere do most or all of the stuff in house. Didn't sound like MrBelevedere had his own anodizing baths. Not that has any bearing on the product's end results.

Why do we even have a Moparts section called the restoration section? To look at new shiny products? And to watch the pros sell their products?

Hey Steve...my wheel guy mentioned a place once around here that did anodizing I seem to remember
I'll be seeing him soon (just placed an order for some aluminum outers) and will ask him what the scoop is on the place then and let you know

Thanks. That lead you gave Troy on Orange County plating looks promising. Waiting for parts to come back from there. Prices were like half of what some places that were suggusted.

Will he just do the anodizing part? Or does he have to do the whole restoration and polishing?

Re: aluminum reanodizing question - 02/28/10 05:30 PM

Quick question....I hope Im not hijacking....
Do the aluminum parts that are stripped of their anodizing, and polished "NEED" to be re-anodized?
If a car is kept inside and doesnt seem much sunlight, you'd think it would be ok??

Thanks!!

Wally.

If they were stripped and polished, it would be basically like having aluminum wheels that were polished. You'd still have to give them a freshen up now and then.

And the anodizing would keep them looking like new?
