What would a early production serial # look like

What would a early production serial # look like - 10/28/09 01:31 PM

Just curious, would it be something like JS29U0B000005, or would it continue in sequence for every car model produced. For example, would the Cuda and Challengers for 1970 have started out with zeros or would they have shared the build numbers with C, B, & A bodies with just the model number being different.

first of the last 6 would always start with a 1 , not a zero .

All E,A,B and C bodies shared the same VIN sequence. Challengers, Cudas, Darts exc...were all built together. They didn't just build the Darts on one line and the Cudas on another. Like Johnahah said...the VIN sequence started with a "1" not a "0". The VIN sequence is for total cars produced...not just one body style.

Each plant would start at 100001

So it could be possible to see two cars with almost the same numbers also(but very unlikely)

SO if you had a serial number that was I60045.
Would that be an early production or a later year production.

It depends on the assembly plant & model year.

That number might be be about mid year for a large plant like Hamtramck, but fairly late in the year for a small plant like LA.

It would have been the 60,045 car built in that plant, in that year.

I'll disagree, it was more like this;

It would have been the 60,045 VIN assigned in that plant, that model year.

The cars were not built one right after the other based on VIN sequence.

I thought hamtramck had 2 lines...the second one starting with sequence# 200000. pretty sure I read that somewhere. not really sure. I could be smokin' my underwear. lotta beer under the bridge, I forget stuff.

Hamtramck did have two lines. They may have done something like that some years, the possibity was mentioned in one of the 1967 TSBs for sure.

I know that in 1970 it did not work that way though, so once again, I suppose it depends on the plant & model year.

I think you are mixing a couple of things...

As Barry said, Hamtramck had two lines and in some years, what line the car came off of is indicated on the tag.

Some early cars like Valiants, Lancers, Barracudas and Darts had VINs that start with the 500000 series. These cars may have been built at the Hamtramck plant and come off of the same line such as line 2 so it would appear that cars built on line 2 all start with 500000 but the connection is a little loose. The VIN assignment is related to the make of the car, not the production line from which it came.

Speaking of VIN's with one's (1's) how hard would it be to remember your VIN if this was it

so this is car 11,111, probably built on November 11, and rolled off of the assembly line at 11:11 AM

Would there possibly be a third car; RM23H9E100001 or did the LA plant not do Road Runners? I know they did '69 GTX's at the LA plant....

RR's also for '69 at LA.

I don't seem to have that one.....

SPD would be 8/28 or 8/30 for the 111*** group.

Barry,

IIRC, typically the first 100 cars or so were so called "Pilot" cars, used to set up the assembly line for the model year. If this is the case, VIN's 100001 - 100101 would be Pilot cars. Were these cars finished and sold or am I confuzzed?

Re: What would a early production serial # look like - 11/01/09 02:15 AM

Well, it would be hard to say for certain on all of them.

Take BH23G0B100052 as one example.

It has a broadcast sheet sequence number of 1000001, so it was the first car scheduled for build on Assembly Line 1 at Hamtramck for the 1970 model year.

What happened to the first 51 VINS / cars? Assembly line 2 for some perhaps, but deffinately not all of them.

To me, pilot cars were pre-production. Some had VINs "pulled" out of the pool & they were built early. I have one on file with a 731 date but its VIN is outside of the first 100 VINs by a bit. 100052 mentioned above has a SPD of 801 which was the official start of the 1970 model year. So, the 731 car in all likelyhood was a pilot car.

The Yellow Jacket / Diamante ownership was retained by Chrysler for several years, but I am not aware of any others that they hung onto anywhere near that long.

For 1970 Hamtramck, some cars in the first 100 vins assigned had 'JOB NUMBERS' on the fender tag while others were not.

Some of them also have M VON prefixs, which on the early cars means show car / sales bank. These cars were sold as used cars after their 'show' purpose was no longer needed.

Hopefully more information comes in, this is a fascination of mine to say the least. I have more questions than answers.
