71 340 choke ? - 10/15/09 03:11 PM

What is the correct part # for the choke? I've got a # BT-245 with a big 45 and the rod has a #527. the choke should be closed but its at the end of its travel and wide open, i do have a 1/4" inch spacer with two thin gaskets that i think were stock. Thanks

The original Chrysler choke # for a '71 & '72 340 intake was: 3512875
and the Carter part # was: 170-148

The Carter # you have was originally for a '72 400 big block but is inter-changeable with the 340 #.

The Chrysler part # for '71 & '72 intakes is NS-1, meaning the choke is no longer avail.

Your carb to intake gasket does not require an additional thin upper and lower gasket; the original was made from Aluminum and was slightly thinner and used an upper and lower thin gaskets.

You will have to repair yours or find a good used or NOS choke, David.

Ok thanks, the choke itself looks new, i'm guessing i need a longer rod from the choke to the linkage to make this one work.

FWIW If you don't want to spend the money on a new choke and have an intact used original I will restore them(dissasemble, replate, etc.) for no additional charge with any carburetor restoration I do, I'll also replate any supplied carb or intake manifold related parts (linkage, brackets) etc. at no additional charge.

The rod with the swivel bracket on it is a little closer to the 2nd rod from the right, on the 2nd picture. You better correct that and retake it.

Obviously what Scott's done is just re-touched the photo using a photo shop program....That's how he does his carb restos too....He just sends you before and after shots...nudge nudge wink wink...

whats that little whatchamacallit on the part that goes on the throttle bracket with the black on it, it looks like a threaded part,is it a 70 or 72 thing? my 71 does not have that.

That's the threaded end that screws on the rod pictured on the far right

That carb and kickdown linkage is off of a 1969 340 A-body, it goes with the AVS carb shown below (ignore the BB intake).

Nice AVS, is that a 68 avs? i have a 68 avs #4426 4- speed carb that has the single screw, and a 69 340 avs with the two screw idle adjusters. I like the avs's nice carb when set up right.

Re: 71 340 choke ? - 11/02/09 01:53 AM

Nope, it's a 69 (automatic). F8 date code makes it a June 1968 production date for an early build 69 model 340 car.

Avs's are good carbs, easy to adjust and work on, not typically the best for maximum HP but they'll give you a great all around drivability with respectable power and are generally trouble free once set up properly.
