Correct Color for Bengal Chargers - Once and for All

Correct Color for Bengal Chargers - Once and for All - 08/29/09 01:41 AM

I am going down to the shop tomorrow to talk about what color I am painting my 'cuda. I want to paint it the same orange as the Bengal Chargers.

The question of what color is correct has come up a couple of times here on Moparts. After searching through the archives, here is what I found:

Some state Bengal Chargers were "Tiger Orange" with the PPG code 60326.

Some state they were "Omaha Orange" with a PPG paint code of 60242.

And some state they were "Omaha Orange" with a PPG paint code of 60436.

Which is it?

Not sure if this will help, but you may need to find the code on the Michigan highway department vehicals back in the late 60's?

Fifty "Bengal" Chargers were special ordered by Cincinnati Dodge dealer Tom Kneer to commemorate the Cincinnati Bengals' first year in the American Football League (AFL). All of the cars were painted "Tiger" orange and had black "Bengal" Stripes, black vinyl tops and black interiors. The cars were optioned with a variety of equipment.

As a devoted football fan, Tom Kneer was very excited to learn that his city would have an AFL expansion team beginning with the 1968 season. He decided to build a special car to celebrate the event. He envisioned mating the sleek new form of the '68 Charger with badgethe feline "Bengal" name and team colors - a match that couldn't miss.

Tom found out from Barry Buse (one of the team owners and a close friend) that the team's primary colors would be orange and black. In 1968, Orange paint was not available as an option on Chrysler Corporation passenger cars, so Tom selected an orange paint currently being used as a fleet color for Dodge trucks. The color he chose was originally developed for use on Michigan State Highway vehicles

I think you'd save yourself a lot of trouble to use EK2 Go Mango.

EK2 Go Mango/ Vitamin C.....is basicaly the same formulation for Hemi Orange without the metalliac agent/binder,......Omaha Orange, or Competition Orange as it's sometimes refered to is different........the PPG (original supplier to Chrysler) code for Omaha Orange is DRA60436,......you should be able to cross-link that number to another paint brand/manufacturer, depending on your choice of finish material

Ted,... while the Go-Mango/Vitamin Orange is very close in shade to the Omaha Orange, it dosen't quite have the same "flop" agent in the mix that Omaha Orange has, causing an almost orange-orangeyellow transformation in varing light

IIRC 60436 is the current number for Omaha Orange, superceding 60242. When I was at the shop today, we put 60326 in the computer and it did come up as "Chrysler Orange".

I do not know one way or the other. But since Dodge truck fleet colors were mentioned;

That is from 1966 & it sure does not look like yellow to me.......

Here is the "ORANGE" section of a fleet colors chip book I have. It could be almost any of these.

I'll defer to you on this one, although it would save him some trouble, no?

He could go with the Mango/Vitamin C, would be more "correct", but if he's looking for a slighlty different "hue", the Omaha Orange would be it, then again Dupont's line of Hot Hues has some really wild oranges, ......but I guess the lad has his mind set on Omaha

This has been a good discussion, but still has not answered the original question of which orange is correct - Tiger or Omaha?

Tiger: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...rue#Post3848329

Omaha: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...rue#Post4467131

BTW - I am looking to put a "year correct" color on my '68.

So Sorry there!, I was under the impression you had a Cuda of the E body persausion!....my mistake

Erik,......the PPG DRA60436/60436 is the original manufaturers code as supplied to Chrysler in 68,.....I know most of the paint "codes"/mixes today are on computer, and being so, the manufacturers have eliminated, or substituted alternate mixes/shades,....that in some cases just aren't right,....or available in certain mix formulations like BC/CC,.....I went thru this with "Curious Yellow" for a customer who wanted it in Dupont ChromaBase BC/CC,...the mix they had, had no alternates, it was way too green, but if you have access to color hue carts, and an original sample you can perform a match, to be blended/mixed based on the hue code,.....this is when your trying to convert PPG, to another paint manufacturer,....what "paint" system are you planing on useing?, if it PPG, it should be no problem, if you've searched the code/mix, how many alternates available?

Re: Correct Color for Bengal Chargers - Once and for Al - 08/31/09 11:06 PM

Trying to get this post back on track..... does anyone KNOW FOR SURE what orange is used on the Bengal Chargers? I just posted 21 ORANGE chips from a fleet book, which one did the state D.O.T. use in '68? I also don't know if I can cross over these fleet paint codes to modern paints. If you want more info on these colors I'll try to help out.

Mike - No prob. I have always had e-bodies up until this 'cuda. We are going to shoot it w/ PPG, so we should not have a problem.

Scott - I have never seen a piece of paper like that. Seems like pretty good proof that 'cudas were painted 60436.
