SHELBY DODGES: Identifiable by Fender Tag Codes?

The VIN doesn't say squat. Want to determine if an Omni GLHS is actual factual.

Can post tag if helpful.

Anyone?

If it's a Shelby it should have a tag in the engine comp that gives the serial # shouldn't it?

I think you can also give the VIN to a Dodge dealer and they can give you a rundown of it. At least they can on the newer cars. I gave my VIN to a friend at a dealer and he ran off all the specs for me on my Durango. I found out that it was an SLT "PLUS" which I didn't know before.

OK..there are 2 types of Dodge Shelby cars. There were Shelby cars that were built at the Dodge factory that CS collaborated on, they had Shelby badges and logos and once built went to the dealers to be sold. These cars have Mopar Vins

Then there were cars that were built at the Dodge factory but were then shipped to Shelby American for modification. These cars were then sold through select authorized Shelby Dealerships. These cars do have a SHELBY AMERICAN VIN and TAG.

If the car is a GLH, it won't have it. If the car IS A GLHS, then it should have the SA VIN.

This is a photo of the Dodge Shelby Turbo Charger that I owned. Was a Shelby not modified at Shelby and carried a standard Dodge VIN.

I'm with you, I think. Basically, the diff between a "Dodge Shelby" and a "Shelby Dodge"?

The Omni GLHS was 86 only, and did not have alot of the standard 87 Shelby Charger GLHS goodies. so, you could get a GLH or GLHS in 86.

This one did not have the CS emissions sticker (Mopar one), or dash plaque, so somebody was cloning around, as it has the 'big' speedo and leather wheel, Shelby rims, and decals. There was no dash emblem at all (Omni or Shelby).

A guy at the Nats told me that the Dodge Shelby's were a better car. He said that Dodge accually beefed up the engines before adding the turbo. Shelby just added the turbo to a stock 2.2/2.5 engine. That is just what I was told.

So the Daytona Shelby Z (that had the ground effects similar to the Daytona Pacifica) was built at Dodge and the Shelby Daytona(that had ground effects like the Daytona ES) were the Shelby versions correct?

To my knowledge...no Daytona cars came from Shelby American for public sale.

Go to this page on the SA site and down at the bottom of the page is a pull down menu under the "past cars" section that gives you and overview of Dodge Shelby cars and SA cars.

I worked at Belvidere when these cars were built, they all got the same 2.2L Turbo, the difference was Shelby added an intercooler and other goodies.

You are correct for 1986, the GLHS had a TI motor with an intercooler added. But if I'm not mistaken, the 1987 GLHS Charger got a true TII motor with the cross-drilled head and steel crank.

87 GLHSs got a t1 motor same as the 86s and same as the 87 csx and lancer. Also the Shelby America cars did not get a Shelby America VIN like the mustangs. The Fender tag does have GLHS on it somewhere I would look at mine and take a pic but it is at my Dad's house.

To find out if your '86 GLHS is a real S car, you'll have to have the vin checked against the master list of '86 GLHS vin numbers. Go sign up on Turbo-Mopar.com, and get in contact with ShelbyMotorsports. Steve has access to the master vin lists for each Shelby Dodge produced and can confirm if the car is legit or not.

Only the 1987 - 1989 CSX's and the 1989 Shelby Dakota had the extra "Shelby American" serial number plates on the rad support. The 1986 and 1987 Shelby GLHS, as well as the 1987 Shelby Lancer did not have this tag.

Interesting note - The '87 GLHS actually has "GLHS" stamped on its fender tag (see pic of tag from '87 GLHS #80 that I junked last year).

I stand corrected. Thanks for correcting me and sorry for the bad info. I gave earlier. I knew I had seen the Shelby Vin on the Dodge versions before but thought they all had them.
