Oh No! AMD B-body rear glass not Charger

Oh No! AMD B-body rear glass not Charger - 09/24/22 02:14 AM

Team,

Has anyone bought and installed the tinted AMD rear windshield
for 68-70 Mopar non-charger B Bodies (Coronet, Satellite, road runner, SuperBee) ??

I bought one...it cost almost $600 with shipping from classic industries
At first glance, standing next to each other it sure looks good and appears to match exactly
but it does NOT!!!!

You can place the new one over the old one and its very close.. the outline is almost perfect
BUT, when you try to place the old one over the new one - you can't

Why?

Because the curved part starting from the side moving toward the center of the windshield
are sculpted downward on the original glass But, they are raised on the repro...

Again, starting with your hand on left side of the glass moving to the right,
your hand will start up, go down, go backup across the center then down then up to the right side

in other words, on the original, the entire glass (not just the edge), follows the contour of the
rear windshield cowl panel (also called the dutchman panel)
on the repro only the edge does.... .

and yes this is the mopar "licensed product" with chrysler logo that I paid an upcharge for...

it physically fits in the frame "flush" but when you attach mouldings or catch a
view of it in the light correctly ,, it doesn't look right at all.

Has anyone run into this?...
Is this an early production defect that they are trying to dump on me?
or is this how they make them?

I would keep my 52 year old piece but it is so badly scratched there is no way to polish it out..
it looks terrible in the light because of so many scratches...
Anyway...

If you've bought and installed one of these - please chime in

Thanks for the ad ...

I think it’s a known issue. I bought a full set of glass for my 69 gtx and my restorer said we are using the original rear glass cause the amd won’t fit. The new one is sitting in my shop storage area.

wave 69 Coronet RT, all restored . Tried replacing front and rear windows because of scratches . Could NOT get rear window to fit right , so cleaned up original the best we could , and put 52 year old , Scratched up Original Window back in . With Re-pop Parts I've found 75% of the Parts don't fit or work out of the Box VS Old Original or N.O.S. Parts . drive Ronnie

Geez: I'd be screaming at them for a full refund for what you paid.
AMD has a reputation to maintain for sure in this hobby

I'm sure most on here can relate to the frustration and aggravation of a situation like this.

I had to wait a long time for them to get this in stock.
It took a long time until I got a chance to install it.
I get it in the car (test fitting) ..and then I see this.... .I wanted to scream!!

The glass (when I bought it) cost $360.00 plus over $200.00 in freight...
Plus all the time to take the old one out, clean up the frame etc...

I paid the up charge, figuring since it was an official chrysler licensed part
That it would be a match... Obviously this isn't true.

The question is: do they actually make this "correctly" or not?
if they don't, there is nothing I can do..

If they do... I don't know what or even if they will do anything to remedy...
I did notice the price on the AMD website for the official "Chrysler licensed" tinted rear
glass is $100.00 more now $450 plus freight shipping...

I'll be calling Classic Industries and AMD tomorrow....

It's not your fault that time has lapsed since purchase. You bought knowing it was correct fit. It was bad since day 1.
Not like glass became warped. I'd still give them a holler, explain situation, & heard their response.
If they're reputable/honorable they'd offer you something for your problem.'You won't know if you don't give it a shot

Re: Oh No! AMD B-body rear glass not Charger - 09/26/22 07:31 PM

Well... I called both AMD and classic industries...

I called AMD first and the customer service guy was, in a word "Terse".
As i was explaining what was wrong, he shut me off and said
"if you don't like it, contact whoever old sold it to you, return it and get a refund.." (duh!)

Next when I asked him if this was just an "early tooling issue or if the newer production glass was any better"
He said if I was looking for contours that specific to stick with the original...

When I asked "What about this glass being an "official Mopar Licensed product"
"and isn't that suppose to mean that it fits as original?"
He repeated his answer and said stick with your original glass...

Next when I called Classic Industries, their tech support guy said
"We've sold 13 of these in the last calendar year and nobody else has ever complained"

When I informed him that what those 13 people got was irrelevant
He informed me that my order was over 6 months old and their policy
does not refund after 6 months....

When I asked to speak to a manager, he put me on hold.

The "manager" then came back and said he would refund my money for the windshield
but would NOT under any circumstance refund my freight charges ($231.00)..
and I would have to pay freight to return the windshield...
He did give me an RA number.

The cheapest freight I could get from Baltimore MD to Huntington Beach CA this afternoon was $285.00
the windshield cost $360.00 SO it would cost me $516 to get a $360.00 refund...

There you have it...
The quality of an" officially licensed Mopar product" and the
customer service of both the retailer and the manufacturer supporting it...

If my memory serves me right
I would have to go back almost 35 years
to remember that last time I got scr#$%rd this hard,,

Did someone on hear say that AMD is a sponsor of Moparts?
How does that help me? or other members on here?

I bought an AMD bumper and it had a cut in one side of it. I called the place I bought it from and they sent another one. Exactly like the first one.

Then I called AMD thinking at the least they should know they've got a run of bad parts. Nope. Cut me off told me to call the distributor, good bye.

I finally got a good one from the distributor who said they had to open several boxes to find a good one. They told me to just keep the bad ones. I will always wonder if they shipped the other bad ones back to AMD or if they went to a customer hoping they would delay looking at it before complaining.

I've got a 69 about to go in for paint and have been thinking about the old scratched up glass I've got for it. I guess it'll be going back in. Thanks for the heads up.

That's a darn shame. What happens when 2 different retailers are involved with selling something.
Sort of like pass-the-buck.
May have been worth to pursue if shipping wasn't across country.
But shipping these days is bad for everyone.
This whole "officially licensed" thing now appears to be just a selling ploy these days.
At least you got the Word-Out here about sub-par parts by these people.
May be of some, if little, comfort to you.

Just sad the way these reproductions fit and look sometimes. It's always best to get the "word on the street" about parts out there if you can.

Thank you to the original poster for getting this out there!

The following is my opinion only
It is based on years of watching this and similar scenarios play out...

Your opinions and experiences may be different

When parts manufacturers tool and build new parts.
They often (almost always) have to iterate a few times to get it right..
So what you get in the first initial runs are parts that are close,
but not good enough for full production.

The term I have heard used to describe these initial run parts
are B-stock parts. These B-stock parts are close but not up to spec.

In order to recoup tooling costs, manufacturers will
will dump these B-stock (less than perfect) parts on the DIY crowd...

Why? ..because they can!

First, they know full well if you are a shop or not.
if you are a shop, they know you are probably ordering to install immediately.
So shops are more than likely to get a good part from a supplier or they will be told it's out of stock.

Next, if you are NOT a shop (DIY guys) they will ship you a b-stock part.

Hoping for one of several things:

1. You won't notice the issues until AFTER they are installed
2. You will notice but not care - because you are either
a) not picky or
b) the part is new and shiny and overall "looks better" than what its replacing.

3. You will not install right away and the company return policy will expire BEFORE you find out part is lame.

Item #3 plays out more than most people realize.. Why?

The simple fact is, in most cases,
DIYers HAVE to buy the parts they need immediately when they get the extra money to buy them.
Not necessarily when they are ready to install...

Because if they don't do this,
they know that either life, wife, or both will ensure that that"parts" money gets be spent elsewhere...
(vacations, new refrigerator, etc...)

So you buy the part, even paying an upcharge for an officially licensed part!
Of course you inspect it visually on arrival to make sure nothing was damaged during shipping . etc...
and then store it until its time to install

That day arrives weeks, months, even a year or two later ...
Say your car finally gets back from the body shop painted all brand new!

Now its time to assemble it!!!!
and you have all these new officially licensed parts (Guaranteed for fit and finish etc.)
that you've been collecting for years in some cases
that are ready to go on the car.
Your dreams are about to come true!

FUN FUN FUN right?
WRONG!

When you try to install that new door panel, seat cover, windshield, weatherstrip, moulding, bezel,
chrome whatever,
Now you find out it doesn't fit or match exactly the part it is replacing...

Now you have to go back to the seller (if they are even still in business)
and plead your case...

Good luck...

Most resellers/manufacturers will say - "I've sold 20 of those and never ONCE had a complaint"
Meaning the problem is obviously the customer and not the part...

In order to look like they are standing behind their name/reputation and warranty etc. (as opposed to hiding behind it)
Resellers may offer you a refund on the part (as long as they can sell (dump) it to some one else)
but they will not pay shipping costs even though they sent you the lame part to begin with.

When you are shipping large items like windshields, Quarter panels etc.
Sellers know that the to and from shipping is frequently more than the cost of the part
Even the most angriest customer is not going to pay $400 in total shipping charges
to get a $300 refund....

Buyers Beware

Re: Oh No! AMD B-body rear glass not Charger - 09/30/22 12:04 AM

Probably the way it works when total production run is relatively small & EVERY part has some value.
Which I imagine is case with many vintage parts. Not like you're making 1,000's of windshields for 68-70 b-bodies.
Different case for oem cars makers needing windshields.
Hate to think how many cases like this exist.

all new/reproduction parts that are "bolt on/glue in" and go, mean that you will spend extra time making them fit. biggrin

OK, back to windshields. My 70 Charger has a PPG ( Pittsburg Plate Glass)windshield, put in before I bought the car 6 years ago. So, surfing around, I found this..

https://koolkatzautoglass.com/produ...-gtx-roadrunner-windshield-oem-brand-new

Don't know a thing about them...anyone else hear of them? Made in China......but hey, if it fits.

Hi, thanks for the reply..
You're showing the front windshield,
The trouble we're having is the rear windshield which I believe is only available from AMD

Try Auto City Classic. Got my windshield and AFAIK only source for side glass for 70B convertible. Perfect match to OE glass.
