Trunk gasket problem

Trunk gasket problem - 08/16/22 10:34 PM

I just installed an OER trunk gasket in my 70 Charger and now the trunk lid is hard to close and my panel alignment is off. Without the gasket panel alignment and gaps are perfect, now the trunk lid sits about 1/16"
higher than the quarter panel. I can't imagine that the closed lid will compress the gasket any time soon so that everything aligns again. Has anyone else had this experience? Is there a thinner or softer gasket that I should try?

My challenger acted similar with the typical D shaped gasket material. This Y profile stuff from DMT is what I replaced it with. Huge difference. I think their page says they had it made just for them.

This is common. Yes, there are several different grades of trunk weatherstrip. Some are made from a denser foam than original, and are hard to compress, resulting in the issue you describe.
I cannot speak on the OER brand of weatherstrip specifically.
Look for a reproduction that has the moulded lip on the sides and rear, and no lip where it glues on the tail panel. This is how the OEM weatherstrip was, and is one sign of a better quality weatherstrip.
Your weather strip will compress over time, and if it is only making the trunk lid sit up 1/16", then it most likely will settle and be OK.
I have seen some where they are so dense, that you cannot even close the trunk lid, so yours doesn't sound that extreme.

I will second the DMT recommendation. They sell excellent quality pieces

I had a similar problem with a Soffseal trunk weather strip, made the lid sit slightly higher, I put some paint sticks wrapped in making tape on top of the weather stripping at the 4 corners of where the lid was slightly risen, closed the trunk, left it for about a week, that compressed the gasket enough for it to return to it's proper alignment...

I ordered the DMT gasket to give that a try. I'll post the results when I get it.

I used these. Really nice.
