1970 440-6 manifold heat shield

1970 440-6 manifold heat shield - 03/25/22 11:29 PM

I’ve seen a few pictures and videos of what look like unrestored 70 Six Pack engines, and a couple have the 4bbl heat shield on the driver’s side manifold. How common was this (if original on any)? Was it just early or late in the model year, or random? Thanks in advance.

Fairly certain on this.........the heat shield should be on all E & B body 383-4, 440-4 & 440-6 with non fresh air hood. The N96 cars did not have the shield....have no idea why.

The original car I saw the shield on was a Superbird, so that supports what you’re saying.

We are talking about the heat stove right?
My 6BBL superbird had the broken studs for the heat stove in the manifold so I'd have to assume it was there originally.

Regarding the stove on 70' 440/6 motors (non fresh air), it seems somewhat prevalent on Superbirds, I've yet to see one on an unrestored/original/survivor 1970 Charger 440/6....I don't follow the other B bodies enough to care.....The majority of E body 440/6 are fresh air cars and I've never seen an original/unrestord/survivor with one....

The heat stove protects the brake line fluid from excessive heat. They come out of the master cylinder on the engine side on the Superbirds. (seems dumb to come out on the engine side, but that is what they did)

All the 70 B body Bendix dual diaphragm disk brake cars from 383 to 440/6 exit on the engine side, except the HEMI....heat stove was to generate heat for the 4 bbl snorkel air cleaner IMO, not protect the brake lines/master from heat....71 B/RB have the heat stove, yet all the available master's lines exit the driver's fender.....

My question is...Where is the nut for the top stud on that master cylinder? I hope it was not quite finished yet.

You have me thinking a bit deeper on this topic......your comment re: 440-6 Chargers seems to be spot on. Also, the 440-6 E Bodies. For the intended function of intake heat this heat shield/stove seems to have been designed for dual snorkel 4 barrel big blocks. However, apparently at least some of the 440-6 cars got them.
