440/426 Oval Air Cleaner Black Base Color

440/426 Oval Air Cleaner Black Base Color - 02/21/22 02:27 PM

I'm trying to find the correct color/tone for the six pack/hemi over air cleaner black base (not sure if they were all the same, but let's assume 71 Hemi). Tried to do a search but I'm not coming up with anything tangible. I see some that are gloss, and some that look a more semi gloss. The one on my Roadrunner is gloss black but I'm sending another one to powder coat today and didn't want to assume what I had was correct.

That isn't the same shade as the engine and a Hemi is a different shade than a wedge, also 70/71 Hemis are different than earlier engines. Frank baldason has all of the correct shades for the different engines and air cleaner lids.

I'm referring to the black base section, not the lids.

Powder coating although popular today was not used by Fram the manufacturer/painter of those air cleaner bases.
The bases were painted black enamel right over the bare steel

My '69 RR, untouched 17,000-mile original AG.
I've had 3 of them, all the same as this one.

Thanks guys. From what I can see it looks a bit more semi glass than full on gloss. This car won't be an OE restoration, I just wanted something close enough to not look outta line. When I bought it it was pretty much satin which I knew wasn't right.

Gloss finish, not satin.

I'm seeing the same in a Paul Herd restoration guide I found online as well. Dropped off to the coater and told him gloss black.

Ya gotta watch the Paul Herd "info" - frequently he's wrong.
Double-check everything in his book before proceeding !

I agree with going to a respected source like Frank Baldason.

I think it is kind of a cheap shot to go after Paul Herd. He is someone who actually put together a highly detailed 300 page document in 1994, sold it, and had it published. Very few on this site have done anything close. Is everything perfect? No. But he deserves a lot of heartfelt credit.

If someone else is so much more knowledgeable than him, where is your published book?

Maybe some of the more knowledgeable people are too busy to write about what they know, or maybe they don't want to share it for the price of the royalties from a book work
Most of the real experts know who they are and don't need to brag or take time to brag on paper twocents

Ive had a couple NOS bases for the 69 Airgrabber
NONE were a full blown gloss black,
They had a shine to them but not something that looked like glass.
