Mopars with MANUAL disc brakes? - 12/29/21 01:47 AM

What Mopar cars were originally available with MANUAL disc brakes? I only remember seeing A bodies.

A bodies were. There was an obscure B body manual disc brake option in 1970 listed for B body taxi cabs.
I have an NOS master cylinder listed as being for 72-74 E bodies with manual disc brakes, which may be for 72-74 B body also.
I’ve never actually seen a 72-74 B or E body with manual disc brakes in person or in a magazine article, but seeing how those years usually get ignored over their 70 and 71 predecessors that doesn’t mean much.

I did a manual disc brake swap in 1973 and used all the parts, including the master cylinder which came with the mounting studs installed, from a 1967-1969 B body taxi / police car. I bought everything from Chrysler parts department. Had to be manual brakes as I was using Max Wedge exhaust manifolds.

my brother had a 73 or 74 sattelite 4 door, 318/904 combo, power steering, but factory manual disc brakes.
i converted it over to power brakes because his wife [at the time] couldn't stop the car.
i hooked the booster to the original pedal, and if you just LOOKED at applying the brakes, it would put you through the windshield ! laugh2

Mom & Dad bought 4dr Valiant new in 1976 off the lot. /6, with power steering and light package as only options on it !! . . . Not even a radio - I still have that delete plate ! . . . BUT, it did come with manual disc brakes on front . . . never seemed to be an issue.

On my 70 Sport Satellite, I upgraded from the 4 wheel manual drums, to manual front disc/back drums . . . thanks to Dr. Diff, used the aluminum master cylinder, and a set of his stainless steel braided front hoses to the calipers . . . never felt that it needs power brakes, pedal feel is good and not too hard at all . . .

I ordered a Challenger in Dec, 73 with manual front disks. I still have the car and drive it regularly, still with manual disks. It does take more pedal effort than power, but it seems to stop the car well. I replaced the original master cylinder when I restored the car in 2016, The replacement part doesn't look the same as the original. IIRC, I got it from Advanced Auto.

According to GG only A bodies. In the 45 years of owning well over 150 Mopars I too have never seen a B/E body with manual disc. I would like to see the factory taxi and cop car options.

This is the part listed for ‘72-‘74 B & E body manual disc brakes. It looks like the master cylinder for ‘71-‘74 power disc brakes but the casting number is 2229271.
This sample has a Bendix label that says reman but everything about it looks NOS.

well, GG is not correct, as i have seen different ! in my junkyard days, we took in a 72 or 73 318 charger with manual discs, and a 71 /6 challenger with manual discs that i can remember off the top of my foggy head. odd combos for sure. then there was the car my brother had. it was changed over to power using my junkyard parts.
i'm sure there were others out there across the country, no matter what galen says.

Back in '84 I had a '73 Satellite Sebring with manual disc. Car had a 318/904. I used to have just a general overall pic of the engine that showed the MC, but I've long since lost it.

I have an 80 2 door Volare that came that way from the factory. I also have a spare NOS master for it in case I ever need to replace the 41 year old original.
Theres a guy on the /6 forum recently with an ~82 D150 that he claims is so equipped, was asking about adding power brakes to it

My '73 Challenger has manual front disc brakes, although it's been upgraded since I purchased it to use larger rotors than it came with.

Had a 70 Duster race car that way, best stopping car I ever had and it had the drum brake master on it too. Original /6 auto, I put a 383 in it.

oh yeah, forgot. My 1st truck was a 79 D100. /6 3 on the tree, manual disc and "armstrong" steering. I hauled and towed with that truck especially after a V8 swap and I never had a problem bringing that truck to a stop. pedal effort wasnt that bad at all.
More recently my son had a 80 stepside, /6, 4 speed OD, did have power brakes but still manual steering/ which I thought was a weird combo.

Is the manual disc brake pedal any different, different pedal ratio maybe ?

Re: Mopars with MANUAL disc brakes? - 01/09/22 02:40 AM

I've also seen F bodies and D100 pickups with manual disc brakes.

I have a listing for repro '72-'74 E body manual disc master cylinder lines (to iron combination valve).

I don't have a listing for any other B/E body applications with manual disc brakes.

manual pedal ratios are different than the power brakes, but i can't give you the exact ratios.
however, they will be around the 6:1 or so, on average.

For the factroy options, best on line resource is Hamtramck Historical
Look at the dealer data books.

For '68 there's a Canadian fleet data book. Power booster mandatory for fleet Belivideres https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/dealerships/1968FleetBook-03.shtml see page 2 of Fast facts under Belvidere.

Some years he's got ordering info posted as well. For example https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/dealerships/_1968-DealershipsOrderingInfo.shtml?load_img=35
and one for '72 https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/1972PlymouthOrderingInfo/1972_page_76.jpg

I'm not saying those are absolutes, but gives a pretty good idea of whether it was a somewaht normal combination,

Here's '74 showing both manual and power disc options.
