any glass guys? need tips.... - 12/14/21 02:12 PM

Anyone what to share some tips on how to install front and back windshields. Its on a 68 GTX, I have I believe the 5/16" butyl for the back glass and a new gas gasket for the front. The car is freshly restore, so all areas are clean with new paint... I have zero experience....

Thanks....

With zero experience you should just get a glass installer to come to your shop and do them both. He can do it in an hour or two and guarantee it won't leak. It is not a one man job unless you know what you are doing.

I gotta agree; I've restored maybe a dozen, and always used a glass guy I could trust.
I'll do the moldings myself, but the actual glass work is a PITA.
I'd also recommend running the low-tack 3M masking tape around the openings just in case.

You will need to use 3m 8509 glass bedding compound on the front gasket. If you hire someone urethane is ok for the rear glass but do not use it on the windshield....if anyone says you can do not hire them. The factory also used clear glass sealer in both upper corners, and about 6" up the a pillar and across the lower glass. Most shops do not know this so it is best to supply them the 8509, permatex clear glass sealer, and the factory service manual if you want it leak free. I have had restoration shops tell me no sealer needed just the gasket....they could not be more wrong, so listen to what they say before you hire, or do it yourself because it is not worth the pissing match to try to educate someone who does not know what he does not know. It is a messy job and you need to tape off and cover everything. You also can not expect this to be a cheap normal install, it will cost a little more than a ribbon glue in. Good luck.

4406bbl ... Thats my worry, will these guys that install new glass even know the proper way to install it... I've always been a do it yourself kinda guy. I will reach out to a few companies to see what they say..
Thanks...
