72 GTX option ?

72 GTX option ? - 09/21/21 10:39 PM

i saw a 72 GTX for sale on facebook pre 75 mopar swap buy sell page.
the car isn't the best of shape.it's overpriced in my opinion and it looks like a flipper now owns it. someone removed the N96 hood.

it is a original N96 car
it had a V21 stripe, hood stripe, on the fender tag but NO V21, trunk stripe, on the tag.
i used to own a 72 RR with a factory N96 hood and both V21 V25 stripes. my car had both the V21 AND the V25 on the tag.

could you get just the V21 stripe without the trunk stripe?
or possibly did the factory get lazy and forget to stamp the V25 on the tag?

pic of the tag and not correct trunk stripe.

tag is correct for both stripes from that build plant but I have never seen the F14 code on a tag before or the missing E on END

My friend just bought that car,he is a collector not a flipper. If he sells it, and he might, it's only to upgrade to something better. The original N96 hood with the stripes on it is hanging on a previous owners garage wall. He wanted big money for it. The car is in better shape than the pictures showed but it needs some work, rare car, fender tag looks to be the original tag.

Why wouldn't the seller include the hood with the sale of the car? That is BS!

that's the way things go in used cars sales especially when dealing with flippers.
seller probably bought the car just for the hood.
back in the days when they were almost new cars it was very common to buy a car just for the hemi motor. sometimes install a 440 or just sell the car without a motor.

The seller wasn't the guy with the hood, the guy the seller got the car from had the hood. My friend is driving the car up to my house today,we are going to a small local show with the car, then we are going up to my other friends house to help him put the body back on his 71 Charger funny car, then we are all going for Chinese food! It's gonna be a great day riding around in the 72 Road Runner GTX!

Amen to that. There is a collector in ND that made a semi serious business of that. Between the gas mileage, the constant maintenance, insurance, winter temperament, etc., the initial thrill of owning a Hemi soon passed and the bloom was off the rose. This guy would approach a Hemi owner and tell them that he would replace the Hemi with something else (318/383/etc.) for no cost to them if he could keep the Hemi motor. Many owners took him up on that and he accumulated quite a collection of Hemis with this approach.

Well,I just spent the day riding around in this 72 Road Runner GTX,and I cannot begin to tell you how well this car runs and drives. My friend was confident that the car was good enough to drive the 4 hour round trip from Connecticut to just south of Boston and back to Connecticut after only driving it a few miles to get gas since he took the car off the trailer from buying it. It has no squeeks or rattles,it's tight and handles and brakes really well, and everything in the car works! The 440 is docile in normal driving, and will plant you firmly back in the seat like a good 440 does when you put your foot in it. It started right up easily and there was no knocks, ticking or smoking at all. It has the rear sway bar and 3.55 sure grip axle,so we threw around on some twisty back roads, and it handles very well. The body and paint are a 20 footer, and someone put some lower patch panels on the rear quarter panels, and a small patch where the right rear wheel well meets the trunk floor. Overall this car is an amazing rare Mopar that can be driven and enjoyed as is. He has a 71 V code GTX 4 speed Dana air grabber car that he doesn't want to take out of the garage, because it is a beautifully restored car, this 72 is a car he can drive. It was an awesome day riding around in this cool Mopar, hanging out with great friends, and working on the Funny Car! The top two pictures are of the72 Road Runner GTX and the next two pictures are of the 71 V code GTX.

I just finished painting up a nice set of original Mopar 15x7 rallye wheels for the car. These should really transform the whole look of the car. He was trying to negotiate a deal to reunite the original air grabber hood with the car too. Last I heard they were about $500 apart on the price. Hopefully they can get a deal done on it!
