70 Cuda tire options - 06/12/21 01:48 PM

What would be the std wheel and tire option on a 70 440 4 barrel Cuda with auto trans and option 3.55 suregrip package. The previous owner bought the car in 76 and I had a bunch of 14” rally’s that came with it but it always had ET mags since he bought the car. No buildsheet since it’s an LA built car. Nothing on the tag to help either.

Re: 70 Cuda tire options - 06/12/21 02:25 PM

the STANDARD tire was a GOODYEAR POLYGLAS F70-14 w/Raised White Letters on a 14x6.0" steel wheel painted body color with the stainless steel "PLYMOUTH DIVISION" hub cap

Without the build sheet is there really any way to tell for sure what tire and wheel combination any particular car came with , outside of the standard tire / wheel option????

It has always surprised me to the number of high performance models of the muscle car era that came with 14's...not just Mopar. My 1970 440 Cuda with the 3:55 came with the optional 15 inch rims and Goodyear Polyglas RWL In terms of aesthetics, the 15's fill the wheel wells so much better.

the OPTIONAL E60-15s are roughly ~3/8" shorter in diameter & ~7/8" wider than the STANDARD F70-14s (at least the reproductions - original tires may differ slightly)

interesting window sticker work did the original owner get a mandatory "space saver spare tire" for FREE? scope

there are a number of original details that can point to possible original tire/wheel combinations (cars were built by people and any of the following could've happened by mistake)

1970 'cuda:
red painted brake drums indicate "ROAD" or "RALLYE" wheels
tire pressure decal "62" F70-14s VS. "59" E60-15s, etc.
speedometer pinion 36 - F70-14s VS. "37" E60-15s (with 3.55s)
lower control arm bumper spacers with 15" tires
space saver spare was a "mandatory OPTION" with 15" tires & OPTIONAL with 14" tires (& stud to mount spare in trunk was in different position full size VS. space saver)

STANDARD T87 - F70-14 w/RWL GOODYEAR POLYGLAS tires mounted on OPTIONAL 14x5.5" W21 - "RALLYE" wheels was the most common configuration of a non-HEMI/non-AAR 1970 'cuda

Mark,

If you do decide you want 14” plain wheels, I still have that date code matched set of 5 I got from you several years ago.

Any pics for the different hold down location? Different floor pan or just a different / hole that could be used?

Dan.
Applying same question to a 1970 challenger 340 as example.
Wasn't the E60.15 tires standard equipment?

Using my 1966 Satellite as another.
Wasnt the 7.75.14 blue streak the only avail tire....or were there options for it as well. I know there were no 15" tire options in 1966 correct?

same bracket - different stud in a different location "space saver" VS. full size spare in a E-body scope (convertible used a different bracket welded to the trunk floor)

the original offering (mid-September '69) of a 340 package for the Challenger was expensive at ~$250 & included the E60-15s, but had W21 wheels & W34 spare as additional "mandatory OPTIONs" (another ~$56) realcrazy
the OPTION package was re-vamped around late-October & the 15" tires/wheels were no longer included, but they were on the OPTION list

Correct, there wasn't a big OPTION list on '66 model year cars - HEMI OPTION included 7.75-14 "blue streaks" on 14x5.5" wheels
Satellite included bucket seats, console, full wheel covers w/spinner and other equipment exclusively (only '66 Plymouth b-body with these items)

Re: 70 Cuda tire options - 06/13/21 08:56 PM

Thanks Dan,
When i had my former challenger 340 I had read somewhere the 15s were part of the pkg. wasnt aware that changed mid year

And I was pretty sure the 14" and blue streaks and spinners were the only wheel /tire / hubcaps choice on a Satellite

Where as Belvedere had a couple different hubcaps options

Still trying to decided if I want to put the stock wheels and hubcaps on the car ,,,,as a part time wheel option ,
But IF I do Im 99% sure they will be whitewalls

And using a 68-70 B body for example , they had the crayon markings on the bottom of the decklid . Was this the same on other car lines ?

Sorry to the OP for dragging the topic off topic

those were not the only details of the 14 inch tire , they also had a different Jack hook. same number , but the jack hook had no hole in the side to slide over the the spare tire stud. the jack hook was mounted under the full size spare tier pinched betweened the tire and the trunk floor. see pic.

When I purchased the Cuda about 2 years ago, there was no spare in the trunk. I do not not have the build sheet in order to verify the "space saver"....which is what it should have came with from Hamtramck. The short style stud is in the trunk at the space saver location.

Are you referring to the jack hook on 14 inch rimmed B bodies only?

Im in the same boat as you with an LA Built 440-4 Cuda. Mine is a 4.10 Super Track Pack and no buildsheet. My car originally came the F70-14 White Line Tires. The original owner sent me a pic from late 69 showing the car when it was a month old with the original tires and rally wheels. good luck with your car.
