AMD panels black EDT coating

AMD panels black EDT coating - 08/22/20 04:52 PM

What is the EDT coating ? Electrically Deposited T................?

Everyone says best practice is to take the panels down to bare metal for epoxy primer prep.
My car had the metal replacement work all done already when I got it, the AMD panels all still have
the black coating.

A good portion of this car is still original sheet metal in good shape, only very minor surface rust, original paint.

So I have a combination of original and AMD metal. The plan so far is to media blast the whole car, I assume
the media blast will remove the EDT coating as well as the old original paint.

It will be easy to remove the coating on outside of the car, but what about areas like inside the doors
(new door skins already welded on) or inside the cowl ? And then, assuming I can get these difficult areas clean,
how do I get a paint gun in there ?

What about something like chemical dip-stripping for the doors, will that remove the EDT coating ?

I am not a body man, or paint, but I don't understand why you would need to remove it. I can understand scuffing it before primer and paint. I have a set of 25 year old quarter panel skins for my Dart that still have the EDT coating and have zero rust from sitting.

ProDart you might be right. I keep reading and learning.

For example, Raybuck says their panels are coated with EDP, Electrically Deposited Primer. They say to just
scuff it up, you don't need to totally remove it.

Although that still might prove difficult inside the door for example.

I have always removed the EDP coating and here's why....I had a painter ask me if I wanted to risk my $20,000 paint job to a base coating applied by a 10 year old Taiwan boy making .60 cents a day. Let that sink in.

I had a car painted that came with a coated reproduction hood and all we did was lightly sand it and primer over it before painting it. It was fine the whole time I had it.

I guess you could sand it off, but I would not bare metal any parts that you can't get primer and or paint onto later.

Don't sand off the EDP primer. It's a good protective coating on the part. Just scuff with 400 and and put primer on it. Just did this recently.

Here you go:

EDP stands for Electro Deposit Primer.

1. First thing you need to do is a solvent test on the primer. I use basecoat reducer and a rag to see if I can get the primer to wipe off. If it does, it failed the solvent test and it all needs to come off and put on a good epoxy.

2. I have seen rust UNDER EDP coatings. Most of these panels are made overseas and the prep is not the greatest. Would you trust your paintjob on top of that?

3. AMD has always passed the solvent test for their EDP primer, but you should ALWAYS check each panel. If it were me I would test, and if they passed the test leave it on the interior panels, but still strip the exterior and epoxy prime.

Hope this helps.

Agreed, this has always been my approach the last few decades of doing bodywork regardless of the panels source, all exterior finishes are removed, no need to chance paint reactions down the road...

Bingo! its just a shipping coating. if you trust your whole paint job to that foundation, go for it. what could go wrong?

Body shops here prime and paint over the coating on those aftermarket panels every time. I guess if you've have one that's obviously gotten wet and/or the surface looks questionable then I'd strip it to be safe.

Well I guess shame on me cause all I've ever done is scuffed it and shot it, never an issue and I've never installed anything but ÀMD parts, one of their reps long ago told me not to remove it unless it was damaged or something obviously wrong with it...just scuff and go and that's what I've done, granted I'm certainly not a professional and I only restore my stuff so it's just my twocents

My friend owns a shop and works with it plenty. He light sands it and epoxy coats it. No reason to strip it off. He never has a problem

This is exactly how I prep any e-coated panel. Many times I have gotten panels that are " E-Coated" only to find out it is a cheap black primer that only resembles and e-coat. DO THE TEST!! It only takes a couple of seconds and then you know.

Good advice.
If the coating passed the wipedown test, how would you scuff up the coating for primer
in a hard-to-reach area like inside the door ?
Even media blasting would be difficult because you can't get the nozzle in there.

3m scotchbrite pads - red is the equivalent of 400 grit , all that is needed is a mechanical adhesion . red scotchbrite will scratch por-15 and that is hard as a rock.
