Engine color for 69 383 4Bbl 330hp??? - 05/17/20 02:12 PM

Was the 383 4Bbl, 330hp in a 1969 Plymouth Sport Satellite, Turquoise, or Street HEMI Orange?

Thanks.

Turquoise.
As per factory spec, literature, photos, and original cars I've seen - or owned - since they were new.

iagree Turquoise w/automatic or A/C

but with 4-speed w/o A/C it would've received a "street hemi orange" 335hp 383HP

1969 b-body
330hp = turquoise
335hp = street hemi orange

I'm not looking for an argument, but would like clarification & proof.
Never heard of a non-RR 383 4-bbl getting the orange 335-horse orange version.
Nor of a non-RR 4-speed transmission Plymouth B-body application for the orange 335.
Plymouth made a big deal out of the "special" RR 383, repeatedly quoting "not available in other models".
I suppose an assembly error or some such thing could have occurred.
Got any factory reference on that?

a friend has a B5 '69 Satellite w/383 4bbl 4-speed & 3.55 axle package 3.23 sure-grip factory - it is a 335hp 383HP engine & it is orange (his dad bought it used in the early '70s)

I'll see what evidence I can provide - Satellite 2-door hardtop w/383 4bbl & 4-speed is 1 of 165 per GG's "white book" (not a common sight)

I have a 69 SE charger, H-Code, 383-330 horse, and its turquoise. AC/Automatic. It also came with a small round, unsilenced air cleaner, with a red 383-4-barrel pie tin. As opposed to the orange 383 motor with a 383 Magnum pie tin.

When you bought a Roadrunner/Super Bee/Charger, etc. and opted for a 383, auto, and air conditioning, you received a 330 horse version of the motor, rather than the 335 horse "HP" version. Subtle differences, was carb, and I think they still used the 2v cam on the 4-barrel 330 horse. But maybe someone can clarify that? I do know the original heads had red springs.

When rebuilding the motor, I kept it standard bore and the pistons come up .005 above deck.

the rules for the different drivetrain combinations are responsible for the confusion - but here is one instance that the Lynch Rd. fender tag helps make it easier to understand

the 1969 B-body "street HEMI orange" 383HP (335hp) engines are spelled out as engine assembly numbers "925" (4-speed) & "926" (automatic) on the fender tag and/or broadcast sheet

AFAIK the "926" automatic assembly is reserved for Road Runner & Super Bee w/o A/C exclusively

the "925" 4-speed assembly has exceptions and appears in other B-bodies w/o A/C

here are a few examples - they are not common scope the black Sport Satellite is a 4-speed w/3.91 axle package car

I had a 70 Sport Satellite 383-4 with AC and an orange 335 HP engine. I Hopefully still have a copy of the buildsheet I can dig out. I’ve sent it to others here when I had the car.

1970 just adds confusion - because of a new set of "rules" probably initiated by unhappy '69 A/C RR/SB owners who received turquoise 330hp engines

for 1970 it was simplified:
badged musclecars: Road Runner (RM), Super Bee (WM), 'cuda (BS), Challenger R/T (JS) & Charger (XH/XP) with 383 4bbl ALL received the HOLLEY equipped ORANGE 335hp 383HP engine

everything else:
Belvedere, Satellite, Coronet 440, Coronet 500, Barracuda, Gran Coupe, Challenger, Challenger SE, etc. with 383 4bbl received the CARTER equipped BLUE 330hp 383 engine

EXCEPT those with 383 4bbl & a manual 3 or 4-speed transmission, these received the HOLLEY equipped ORANGE 335hp 383HP engine

I missed the fact that everyone was talking about 69, sorry about the 70 post

Well, this has been interesting and educational, with the info from 6bbl.
I hope the cars others referred to as examples were/are original & untouched.
Forgive my skepticism, but in the 50+ years I've been around these cars I've yet to see a '69 non-RR orange 383/335 myself; obviously they're rare.
The 925/926 info is pretty clear, and in that sense better info than the tags from other plants.
What I HAVE seen, like many of you, is modifications, repainted engines, and a lot of creative disinformation...
Or worse, the folks that attempt to legitimize a car that isn't a correct restoration.
I agree the '70s are a somewhat different deal altogether.

Of course there is another 383 330 horsepower engine that went into the 69 A-Bodies that is orange with a 14" unsilenced air cleaner with a red 383 4-barrel pie tin, but really had no bearing in this thread, I just love to throw it out there... laugh2
