odd E440 HP block - no casting number ?????

has anyone seen a 440 block like this?
no casting number & odd ribbing like a 413 industrial engine

That is odd. It’s been worked on and maybe raced. It has main studs. Is it std bore? I doubt if it is an over the counter block with E440 stamping, though. Any chance it could have come from a dealer like Mr Norm?

What year is the block 66 or 68? I have seen older blocks stamped on pad, despite being over counter or race. Current one is a 62 block stamped B 440, and has Bryant stamped along rear ears. So who knows what builders were doing in the day.

cast 8*5*68 - the VIN's been ground off - looks like it was a full 13-digit
it also has the early mounting bosses on the front of the block any early 440 a-bodies use the 383 mounts?

it is .040" over & had an old Sunrey/Eagle stroker crankshaft in it

maybe a 68 GSS OR ONE OF 6 GTS 440 CARS

Yellow paint peeking out all over, yellow was used for industrial engines for years.

Thanks for the link. That may help with a 440 complete engine that I have that I was told was "an over the counter 440 HP2 block purchased in 1969 for an Excalibur Kit Car". It is stamped E 440, 3 28, HP2 and no VIN and an odd I.D. plate that is nail riveted to the bell housing that read E440. I contacted GG years ago on it and he felt it was an over the counter '69 and not a marine or industrial engine. Later I contacted a former Dodge engineer that was in charge of Dodge engine development from 1962 - 2005 and he checked with others and the conclusion was also that it was an over the counter 440 engine. I still wondered if it might be an industrial engine but am agreeing with the others that it is NOT an industrial engine after seeing these blocks below and this from 440 Source's web page:

"One other addendum.. Some 413/426/440 blocks commonly known as "industrial / cold weather or heavy duty truck" blocks have another pattern all together, with even more reinforcements. Shown below is one of these."

What does the upside down A and the B mean on the pad, I forget?

Right side up, sideways, upside down - no change in meaning. A is called out in the 1969 TSB page at https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/TSBs/1969/D69-25-1%20page7.jpg

The only mention there of a B is for small blocks though.

i worked on a 440 just like that years a go,it was in a Century boat. i was told the owner bought it new and never been worked on,it had factory 2-4bbl and was reverse crank rotation and camshaft gear drive.

the "A" "B' and "C" stampings on the top pad are in reference to the cylinder bores sizes as referenced by the painted "A" "B" "C" "D" on the skirt of the block

as seen in A12's pics above, many small blocks have them stamped on the pan rail for each cylinder

a factory 0.020" over block would be a rare occurrence & I have yet to find a picture of a "yellow" MOPAR industrial engine, got pics?

what kind of acid could be used to wash the VIN surface in an attempt to find the missing VIN?
