E Body Convertible A PIllar Seal Differences

E Body Convertible A PIllar Seal Differences - 02/27/20 02:41 PM

So I have 2 good sets of A pillar seals.

One set has a screw hole with a metal insert at the top and is 1/2"-3/4" short than the other set. They both have Mopar part numbers molded into them so I'm guessing both are original parts and not reproductions.

Can anyone else confirm they have the screw at the top of theirs. I'm thinking it may be a 70 VS 71 thing.

If these get remade I'd have to tell the manufacturer which way to go.

An NOS set just sold on For E Bodies Only. Darn.

odds are its a 70 versus 71 thing.

I know for a fact the seal that goes in the stainless retainer on the leading edge the quarter glass is different between 70 and 71 and later

I agree Bill.

So I've heard (and read) many times that Chrysler didn't sell the numbers they had hoped of the 70 E bodies and cheapened them in 71 (and up).

The qtr glass to door glass seals were "flocked" (covered in that black fuzzy stuff) in 70 and not in 71 and up as one of the cost saving measures.

On these convertible A pillar seals I would assume they used a screw with the embedded metal plate in 70 and then no screw (and embedded plate) in 71.

But the length difference? Doubt its shrinkage. And I think if I have to suggest which one to make it would be "without the screw hole" version only because the market is so small anyway and to keep the cost down.

I'm not sure if it's a 70 vs 71 thing or not. My 71 Challenger convertible (Dec 1970) has the screw in the bottom of the seal on both sides. See photo.

A couple of thoughts I just had. Is mine a leftover set of seals from 1970 or maybe the 70 seals did not do as well and for 1971, they added the screw to better attach it to the body for better sealing and to prevent the seal from being torn up at the bottom? Just some thoughts. If they're reproduced ,I'll buy a set or two.
Thanks.

Thanks for the input Terry.

I'm rethinking and would now suggest making it with the screw and metal insert. I'll send both sets. The metal insert might not be cost effective for them. Personally if that were a $50 final price difference it'd be a no brainer.

Always happy to help with info. Where the screw is on the seal is where the top of the door seals against it. Maybe someone with a 70 convertible and someone with a later built 71 can look at theirs to see if the seal has the screw. It would be interesting to see the results. If the plate is molded in but not drilled, maybe a person could drill it themselves if they did it carefully so as not to tear the rubber. Just a thought.

I'm not sure if this is the same part this company is selling and I'm not familiar with this Canadian company. HAs anyone ordered this particular weatherstrip from this company and if so, was it a good part?

Those are a Classic Industries / OER part. I'm gonna purchase a set to check them out.

My October, 1970 built 1971 Barracuda convertible has the hole. Could be a leftover 1970 part since it was built in October, or a design change to correct a problem on the earlier 1970s?
