The exhaust manifolds were installed on the engine before it was painted. When it left the plant, the exhaust manifolds and attaching hardware were engine color.

And the color didn't last long and was not always painted in total coverage like todays restorers do.
Pictured are Hemi manifolds removed from 70 Hemicuda for headers at less than 500 miles.
Note the runs on the back side of the heat tube.
This set-up is basically brand new.

This is correct finish of exhaust manifold fasteners for 1969 340, and is most likely correct for 1968 318. AFAIK the difference between 318 and 340 exhaust manifold fasteners is just the length of the long hex nuts?

6 hex bolts, 4 hex nuts, 6 studs, all phosphated.

2 long hex nuts and 6 conical washers, all bare metal. The thick conical washers were stamped from steel plate with mill scale on both sides, so the washers also have mill scale on the top and bottom faces with bare metal on the edges.

Of course the final finish was engine paint.

You can verify these finishes by researching AMKproducts.com catalog. They offer a 318 kit of all these fasteners, Part No. C-8062 on page 6 here

that pic is interesting in a couple of ways other than showing the exhaust manifold and attaching bolts.
the transmission holding fixture
the way that fixture seems "mygivered" to the overhead hoist
and the most important, it looks like the torque converter is already bolted to the back of the engine.
how did they correctly line up the pump ears and shafts to ensure the converter fit properly ?

Very easy to line up. Put the tangs of the gear and the slots in the converter at 6 and 12 O’clock and they go together really nicely.

And if you don’t think so TRY IT, don’t argue from you couch. LOL

Yes, the torque converters were on the engine before it was painted and will have engine color overspray. The tool they used to line up the pump lugs is hanging from the hoist.

i completely MISSED that tool !
not arguing from "my couch" [laugh2], but the few times i have pulled an engine with the converter attached, i have damaged the seal on the transmission.
does anyone make that tool so a "tool" like me would be able to attach a transmission like shown ? [sorry for the jack]
