Interior vinyl repainting.

On my 69 charger I need to recolor the lower dash panels and glove box lid. Couple questions. I assume SEM products are the best. Year one sells their own interior paint again I assume SEM made it.What color black? what should be done for prep. Thanks.

Sems sells a conditioner to use before you paint the plastic. I would use that with a stiff bristle brush, after a good washing.

I used a little dawn dish soap and a scrub brush/tooth brush, clean it agitating in all directions, bubbles will likely change in color with agitation. Rinse off, repeat. When you think you have it perfectly clean, do it one last time, bubbles should stay white (no dirt or grease), rinse thoroughly. Use SEM adhesion promoter following directions, then apply SEM color of choice. Works great

I agree -
washing to obtain clean surface. Sem adhesion promoter is the very best - has a nice fine spray which shows glossy when applied.
I had to use acetone for one of my panels to remove residue. Then I used windex - Alcohol solution.

The black color you want is Landau Black. Like others said, clean clean clean your parts. Then use SEM Adhesion Promoter per the can instructions. You will need to spray a light mist coat first and wait 15-20 minutes. Then spray a med/heavy coat and wait another 15-20 minutes. Then you can spray your color. You only need to "mist" the Landau black on the part(s). A couple light mist coats is all you really need. If you mist it on, it will be hard to tell the part(s) are painted.

I've also used the Pearl White from Herb's. It worked out really nice. I had to change some bucket seat hinge covers from black to white. I sprayed them with SEM White first, then sprayed the Herb's Pearl white over the top.

The SEM instructions were a little confusing for me - but the prep spray is different for plastic vs vinyl. You're supposed to clean it well with their soap (i did it a few times), then apply the vinyl prep, then paint after/within a certain timeframe. Read the instructions a few times.

Honestly I was really impressed with the result, great product. I would buy SEM, who knows what year one is pedaling.

Here’s what I do to prep. Clean, clean Clean. I wash everything with dawn. Get it good and clean. I then go over everything with a tak cloth. Then I use commercial grade grease and wax remover. Not the cheap stuff in the spray can, professional grade you get in a automotive paint store. When using that stuff use gloves, read the warning label. I then tak again. If I know Armorall was used on the Vynal use go over it again with grease and wax followed with a tak cloth wipe down.

When ready to dye make sure the panel is warm. Allows the pores of the material to open up. I use SEM. Never used their prep spray. Using the method I described I’ve never had a problem with fisheyes. Word of caution, scuffs in plastic panels found on later cars should be scuffed with a red pad. In particular kick panels.

Question; is there a cross reference at SEM to find the correct color for our 70 Charger vinyl buckets?
We installed a buddy seat in place of the console and after trying two different sprays, not a good match.

If the seats are originals, age will be a big factor in getting a good match, if they're new Legendary Auto covers? you stand a better chance matching the color, 70 Charger interior uposltery appears white on it's own, but is actually somewhat "coffee" in color compared to their 68-9 siblings .... for an SEM match use SEM's Super White, I'd recommend a clear coat of SEM's Low Lustre Clear after spraying the white (or any SEM color for that matter, the clear will not alter the color/finish you applied) it helps retain the color, and protects it from dirt, stains, mars, cleaning agents, etc, etc

You can either use SEM Super White in spray can form or have it mixed in pints/qt/gal by any SEM/ automotive paint supplier (preferred) here"s the gram mix formula for your mixer if needed? and a few pics of my 70 Charger interior, door panels/seat covers are Legendary, the upper pads where black dyed with SEM Super White/Low Luster Clear, the arm rest were white NOS, all "hard" seat components and assorted interior/window trim was black originally... the SEM dyed interior pcs still look "fresh" 15 yrs later....

I found the charcoal from SEM that is supposed to be what we need.
We'll see when it warms up enough to use it.

Does anyone know the SEM match for the 1965 Medium Metallic Red interior color.

I can't help you with an SEM match, but Herb's Parts has their own line of interior dyes PN# 1182 for mid 60's Mopar red metallic interior
