Battery Detail - 08/13/19 03:24 AM

On a battery delivered from the factory in 1970 would the battery case have had a date code?
If so Impression or Embossed?
Date wheel?
Format?
Where would it have been located?

Any help is appreciated

I'm sure someone knows better/has pictures, but my recollection is that there was a date code stamped into the top of one of the battery posts. Letter and a single number maybe?

The ICCA book shows stampings in the top of the battery post but made no mention what it represents, it simply states “factory original battery posts will have markings on top of the positive and negative cable post”. Unsure if any updates have been added since my revision.

I also searched past boards and turned up pretty empty pockets, hoping someone is able to add more to the story

Thanks

Yes, best I remember a single number and letter on top of the battery post.

The negative post will have a letter designating the month and a number for the year. An example would be B9 for February 1969.
I’ve had and seen a few original and nos batteries and am currently looking for one myself but they are impossible to find.

Here's a original 1970 Group 27 red cap that I rescued in a yard about 20 years ago.
Features date wheel.
Different features and different number on the top than any reproduction

Re: Battery Detail - 08/15/19 12:25 PM

Thats a fantastic find ! Thanks for posting up.

So the photo shows Feb of 1970
Any idea what the 209 represents?
Where the date wheel and 209 embossed on one of the sides or bottom?
Was there any indication of anything stamped into the top of the positive or negative posts?

As added information, the ICCA manual provided an example of a cross with K, C, 1, 2, where each symbol is stamped in a quadrant on the positive post. On the negative post was an offset vertical line and the numbers 673. No example was shown of a date wheel or other embossed/impression marking, but the photo is labeled as a 1973 group 27 battery. With none of this explained, how would the author know this was a 1973 battery? Perhaps a leap of faith that the "673" on the negative post was June of 1973, leaving one to wonder what everything on the positive post represented.

Thanks Terry Great photos! Can you shed more light on what’s on the post and location of the date wheel on the side.

I had pictures of Dave Walden’s battery from his Valiant and have been looking for them for days with no luck.
I’m on the hunt for an original group 23 yellow cap battery if anyone knows where one is hiding!!

Unfortunately, I dont own the battery anymore to check the post numbers.
I had them written somewhere if I can find it.
But the date wheel was on the underside.
There was a posting here several years back and when a couple guys saw those pictures I put up and one guy had to have it, cracked side and all.

I do have this 1973 green top group 24 that has seen better days.
All markings including manufacturer are on the underside as well as shown.
73 is in the far right circle, seen if you look close.
I'll check the post numbers.

Terry, thanks for sharing what you have, looks so far like you're the Lone Ranger. So it appears based on the pic's you posted that by 1973 the date wheel was gone and perhaps there was a different case manufacturer, or multiple case manufacturers? So many questions remain and with scarcity of original batteries the sample size and conclusive findings may be difficult.

Hopefully one day someone can add to the stamping on the top of the post . . .
