What are your feelings on racing a restored car?

What are your feelings on racing a restored car? - 03/19/09 12:10 AM

I just took off the Polyglas tires and put on some other wheels and tires because I'm thinking of draging the T/A to see what it will do. In fact, I want to go up against FY1TA's restored black AAR. Does anyone think yay or nay to racing real Trans Am cars that are very nicely restored? That's only if he has it in him to do it of course.

I ran my numbers motor/tranny V code 4 speed Bird about 15 times for Pure Stock before the rear u joint went out a mile from the track driving it to the races on Saturday AM. This was from test/tune Wednesday night before.

I guess there is a good argument against doing it, but the point is don't think that every car you see out there racing are doing so with clones. You may be very surprised.

Have you ever been to the pure stock/fast races? I live halfway in between the two tracks in MI where they run them at, about 50 miles to each track. Most of those cars aside from being hammered on are beautiful show cars.

Original Hemi Car. It gets 20-25 laps/year put on it. Not as nice as most of the cars on this forum, though.

Re: What are your feelings on racing a restored car? - 03/19/09 02:17 AM

Many of the nice low mileage cars that are known including my old A12 were raced a lot for the first few years of their life. The guys who knew what they were doing didn't hurt them for the most part. Take Bob K's car for example. Things can happen but are less likely to be the case at the strip than it would be doing the random road tests that we all do on the street! If you didn't get a chance to enjoy the experience back in the day, this is your chance to enjoy it now. Of course, some of us enjoy just showing and bench racing them too!

That's almost laughable . The AAR has had quite a few floggings on the 1320 .
Get you some M/T drag radials and we will see who can really drive a stick car at the dragstrip !

Run 'em. At least once. That's what they were made for. Not that I have any problem with the guys who don't. Me, I gotta know what a car will do. I wish we had Pure Stock or Stock-Appearing events near me.

A car that just sits and gets looked at is worthless imo. Driving them is most of the thrill anyway and if restored properly having some fun at the track should not hurt a thing. Most of the reason I like Mopars is because they are engineered to be driven hard.

Re: What are your feelings on racing a restored car? - 03/19/09 11:06 AM

Nothing wrong with going down the ol' 1320 a few times. As far as I am concerned, it's almost a "must do" after any restoration. How else are you going to know that everything is dialed in mechanically ? A few hard passes, either on the track or off, is the only way to know that the car is running correctly , and running correctly is part of a restoration. Afterall, if all the mechanicalls are restord, shouldn't they function
good as well as look good.
It's pretty sad to see "restored" musclecars go down the track turning 17 second quarters because nobody had the common sense to stand on it a few times after resto and dial in the carb, timing etc. for maximum seat of the pants results.
To me, that's part of the restoration , to make sure everything is right .

If the cars are numbers matching, I would resist the urge to race. Everything CAN be fixed, yes, but a rod out the side of the numbers block

Another consideration might be your insurance. I don't know what kind of coverage you have but I think my policy said coverage is void if racing, organized or otherwise.

So........ if you owned a car that was worth more than TWICE you annual income, and you knew your insurance company wouldn't pay a cent on the car if you smacked the wall and rolled it at the drag strip, you would go ahead and do it? If the honest answer is yes......... your nads are much bigger than mine. I'll try to say this as nicely as I can without sounding like a jerk, the E-Body owners have more to loose in a worst case senerio with their cars than the Duster or Dart folks. I AM NOT saying that with my nose in the air, it's just the way the marketplace has gone. To me, if I had a car that I really wanted to race but it was too valuable to justify racing it, I would put a different (non-numbers) motor in it and go for it. Or better yet, buy a different car to race.

Re: What are your feelings on racing a restored car? - 03/19/09 02:39 PM

Not sure if this will apply but in a previous life I was a tech for a road racing team which also serviced German cars to pay the bills. We belonged to the local clubs and throughout the year they would have amature track events. These events were deemed some sort of a "Drivers Ed" progam by the insurance company. Not sure but maybe there's another loop hole for your case if you're worried. Or atleast something to look into. Not sure how it worked or if I'm remembering it exactally. This was also 12 plus years ago and things may have changed or my memory is bad. Keep in mind these were weekend warrior race events not in anyway a drivers ed program. A few cars were wrecked as well. Maybe someone here is in insurance and knows a little more about this.

If some chance this was a regional thing I'm based out of Chicago.

Not knowing who you are, and never meeting you in my life, it's kind of peculiar why you would care

I never voiced my own opinion on it and frankly to each his own. All I was stating was that there are people who do it. I have no desire to at this time. Frankly I get my fix from my day job. Almost like if you worked in a candy store, you probably wouldn't touch a chocolate bar in your entire life. I walk past my cars and really have no desire to do anything with them. Don't even drive them anymore. That may change in the future, but for right now it is what it is...

You have NO idea why I bought my cars and for you to make a statement like that... We all bought our cars for different reasons. Some to race, some to just look at, and maybe some for sentimental reasons (had one in high school.. kind of thing). To each his own. I prefer to have stock appearing cars that I can take out for a drive when the weather is nice. And yes I do hammer the throttle every now and then on an open road.

As for your other comment...... I could never afford and have no desire to PURCHASE a car that costs twice my annual income. Some of us who have owned the cars for several years have seen the value of our cars shoot up while our incomes stayed level or even went down the last few years.

Bottom line is......... if a person has a numbers matching hemi cuda vert and wants to install a rollbar and go drag racing, it's his car!! If this same person wants to put his car inside a bubble and build block walls around it, it's his car!! That is the issue here. The original posted simply asked others opinions about racing his car. We are simply pointing out the potential financial risks he takes if he does. If he wants to go racing despite that...... it's his car. There is no need to make fun of, belittle or look down upon a fellow mopar person just on the basis of how he treats his car. Whenever I see a nice Cuda all cut up with tubs and rollcage at the dragstrip, I think to myself, what a shame. But if the owner of that car comes over to my house and sees my cars all under covers in a climate controlled garage, you know what he's thinking? What a shame.........

For me it was very important that my car run like it should. Shortly after buying it, I heard about the Pure Stock Musclecar Drag Race series and was so intrigued, I built my car with this type of racing in mind.

I've spared no expense in the resto and that's still the number's engine sitting in the engine bay, but I fully intend to race the car......call me crazy if you like.

Nothing wrong with that. You have the car and found something you like to do with it and willing to accept/repair any breakdowns etc. That series sounds like just the ticket for guys who like to race but want to keep their cars stock looking.

Wish I had pictures to show you guys. I have a restored 71 440-6 4 spd cuda. It was restored when candy was in. Now its out, so why not race it I thought. I drive it to the track all the time and practice with the pure stock boyz they are mostly a Pontiac crowd. They could not believe it when I had my family at the track and the car wasted the through out bearing really bad and I drove it home with them in the car. I always drive that car even when it was freshly restored.

I have about 75 passes on this car, a very high option 71 Charger R/T .I put on some drag radials, drive 80+ miles, pul it to the line and it runs high 12s all day long. I did build the motor with some racing in mind but it wins at the car shows too. I also have a 71 Challenger 440/6pk that will be at the track this summer, a numbers match sixpack shaker car in the very rare Citron yellow.

They won't. It just looks alot more impressive to run good numbers on the poly's. We have done a few 1.73 60's w/ the AAR, and it has pretty much all the stock AAR stuff in the suspension except leaf springs and front shocks.

No can do. I looked at the rules and I won't pass. Big cam and heads, plus the poly's I have for the rear are L's, not G's,,,, forgot about that.

Get you some M/T drag radials...

Do you find the M/T drag radials better then the BFGoodrich drag radials? (If you have used both?)

I say go for it! If it breaks, you can fix it.

Or like this???

Most asked question at the track: "Is it real"

Answer: It wouldn't be any fun if it wasn't...

Most common feedback from others in my run group: "it's a lot faster than it looks"

Just wanted to say that car looks great with those wheels.

Nice AAR, are those track tires or streets?

This is how I treat my M code RR. (I know it doesn't look like an M code RR but it is)
It is not restored but I will drive it the same even after I restore it. I believe you should drive them like they were meant to be driven.
I have 2 other 69 RR's and they both get raced often and hard. This RR runs 12.50's with sticky street tires and exhaust.
Have Fun with your car and enjoy it.

Handsdown the m/t's are a better tire for 1/4 use,i first tried the bfg's they were totally useless, car spun halfway down the track..switched to m/t's launches with tires up 60's in the 1.60-1.42 area depending on which motor is in it..

Not restored but all number matching, except for headers, low compression pistons & Hughes 1523 cam, 6bbl car. I can't call it 'racing' with 3:23's & skinny tires but its been through the 1/4 a hundred or 2 times & more than that on public 1/4.

Well, I think there are 3 important facts to this thread.

1. It is OK to hammer on a restored car.
2 You called out FY1TA for a grudge race
3 Pretty sure Gary has Accepted the challenge

The only unknowns now are time, place and bet

Paul,

Place will probably be Tri-State in Ohio.
Bet will definately be a LARGE bottle of Captain.
Time... Hopefully soon!

I guess I should just buy the bottle before hand ey?

Have fun with the car. If it's the original engine, nothing says you have to shift it at redline every time.
Here's mine at the Pure Stock Drags.
