FYI...hand oils do go through epoxy primer... - 04/16/19 03:12 AM

I just want to post some info for anyone that has their car in epoxy primer. I have had mine in epoxy since getting it media blasted many years ago. It's been kept in garage ever since. Last week I removed the hood to start getting things ready for paint and I noticed that some light surface rust is creeping through on two small spots on the front of the hood. I realized then that it's the two spots that I always put my hands on to open and close the hood. So I'll be removing and spraying new epoxy there soon.

One thing to remember on anything that is basted then sprayed with epoxy is this. The micro surface profile of the metal after being blasted has lots of peaks and valley's. Most paint manufacturers want a minimum of 2 mills over blasted metal for protection. So the valleys naturally have more than the peaks do. I would guess that that is more your issue than anything else. How many coats were applied? What brand of epoxy?

A few questions come to mind:

1. What brand of epoxy was used?

2. Did you epoxy the car or was it epoxied at the place that blasted it?

3. How was the substrate cleaned after blasting?

Whenever I blast one, I try and epoxy/etch prime asap and I always wear gloves when handling the bare metal. Also need a lower humidity day, otherwise asking for problems.

PPG makes a metal wash that can be used on bare steel to help seal the metal.

Yes and it is a great product, but be aware that acids ( like the wash primer) and epoxy primers usually do not like each other at all. It is usually one or the other.

By ALL means DO NOT use ANY etch primers or metal preps on any sandblasted metal. The metal is ALREADY etched with the blasting. You will have issues later on if you do it that way. 25+ years spraying PPG Master Certified.
