Low pressure power steering hose - OE style?

Low pressure power steering hose - OE style? - 03/19/19 07:46 PM

Looking for recommendations on OE style low pressure power steering hose for a 1970 440 with Saginaw pump. Not necessarily needing NOS or repop with part numbers etc.
It appears most modern 3/8 ID hose has a smaller OD than back in the day. I have purchased 2 different types and the factory style clamps fit too loosely and will not provide clamp pressure. I assume the wall thickness of the older hose styles must have been thicker. Let me know what works with factory style red band clamps? Thanks! Joe

I believe it was 11/32 hose. It was a special hose 3879925 IIRC.

Yes it is an 11/32 hose as you stated above not 3/8"

Thanks to all for the recommendations!

After more investigation I went ahead and ordered the repo date coded hose kit from Bill Rolik. I hope this is the solution!

Some years ago, I got one of those reproduction date coded return hoses that came with red clamps. Looks like similar packaging on the Rollick site. The hose ended up swelling and softening up after about a years use. Hose came right off when I was backing my car and squirted fluid all over the place. There have been many others that used repro return hoses and had the same issue. Hope they changed out the hose type on your order. I ended up buying Gates 11/32 ps return hose and no issues for years now. There is a photo of what the hose looks like when it fails on this link. That is what my hose looked like when it failed. There was a similar discussion about this hose on Moparts, but could not find it.

Thanks for the info. I sent a note to Bill asking him about any reported issues with these hoses. Hoping he has some information.

FYI - Actual factory part number for this hose is 2537699. It seems most everyone is offering a 3/8 ID hose as the replacement for the factory 11/32.

I tried 3/8 and its too loose. All current parts book say 3/8, which is 1/16 bigger then 11/32. 11/32 hose must be getting harder to get. But as others say, you can get the correct size hose at Dealers.

Joe,
I had a reproduction power steering return hose swell up like a cooked hot dog after about a year.
I was able to find a NOS hose part number 2537699 and all has been well since!

This is the hose I purchased from Yearone...about 20+ years ago. The YO part number is FD9925 and is still listed on their website. It is supposed to be what Chrysler sells out of their parts department. The date code on this 2 ft. section is 0092 (1992?). Due to its age, I will not use it. I think the Gates 11/32 hose is the best option. I am leery of many reproduction hoses: heater, fuel, vapor, etc. The quality looks questionable. I usually buy Gates products and wipe off all the lettering with lacquer thinner, resulting in a nice nondescript hose. Sure, your minus the Pentastar, part number, date code, "KV", etc., but you have peace of mind.

I just installed that same hose on my 71 Bee last year

I also had it sitting in the attic for about ten years before installing

My 71 Bee still had the factory hose on it if you can believe that , well the numbers on the hose made me believe that and I have owned the car since 1984

Anyways , I guess I will look that hose over very soon when I pull the car out of winter hibernation within a month

I ended up ordering the Gates 11/32 instead of the repop hose kit. Fits perfectly. Thanks for the suggestions.

I’ve had the same issue with the swelling reproduction hose on two different cars😡
