plating on strut rod nut on lower control arm - 03/11/19 01:29 AM

Because my grand pop painted everything on the undercarriage of the car black, I want to detail everything back to the original colors. I know the lower control arms were bare metal and dipped in cosmoline and the strut rods were natural steel color as well. What was the color of the nut that held the strut rod to the lower control arm? Was that a gray phosphate color or was that like a clear zinc? Sorry, car is a 69 RR.

Is this it?

Plating code "S7" = Cadmium (light silver).

Concerning the appearance of strut rods: yes, "natural steel color", but that covers a lot of territory.

Like many forged suspension parts, strut rods were hot worked and took on a bluish-black mill scale. You can closely duplicate the factory new appearance by getting them squeaky clean (de-rust, wire brush, scrub multiple times with "hot" solvent like laquer thinner or MEK, absolutely no fingerprints) and apply gun bluing, several coats. Follow with RPM wax.

Top rod is treated with bluing. Bottom one is untreated, "natural steel color". (The photo was taken under yellowish fluorescent light. In sunlight there would be a bigger difference between the two.)

No that is the front one that goes through the k frame. I need the plating on the taller / thicker one that has the fine threads at the control arm.
