Restoring a 1971 Charger R/T - 02/24/19 08:24 PM

I am restoring a 1971 Charger R/T. The car has the A54 option (front and rear colored bumpers) Are these rubber bumpers? What makes a rubber bumper? Can i coat mine? Are they just painted?
I also need a set of doors for this car
Thanks for your help!

There is a bit more to the option package, see A54 at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/DealershipDataBook/1971/71_Charger0021.jpg

There is a cutaway view of a 1970 Barracuda urethane covered bumper at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/serviceHighlights/70%20sh%20217.jpg

The rubber on the Charger bumpers was much thinner than the Cuda/Challenger elastomeric bumpers. About the equivalent of heavy rubberized undercoating. Here are a couple photos of an original A54 car....

That photo bucket link didn't seem to work....... (What a surprise!)

Let's try this route......

Re: Restoring a 1971 Charger R/T - 02/24/19 10:11 PM

I am one day going to try using some rubberized undercoating to see if I can get a smooth enough texture and then spray color over that once set. I would try to contact Mike Goyette (Dayclona) He is a Guru on the reproducing of things! Super nice guy too!

Would the 71 GTX have the approximate same thickness coating on it’s bumpers?

John D. Don't forget the A54 Chargers have a unique jack hook specific just to the colored bumper option. I used to have one and I have pics on my home computer if you need to see what it looks like. Eddie

There were a limited number of colors available with rubber bumpers, some more awesome than others. Why not tell us before you figure out how to post pics?

Sounds like a very nice car..,,

I'll try to dig up some pictures of my former survivor white '71 Charger R/T. One thing easy to say and often overlooked in the restorations of '71s is the blackout treatment on the lower rocker pinch welds and leading edge bottom portion of the hood.

The only way that car could be more desirable is if it was a six pack or Hemi with a sunroof!

Re: Restoring a 1971 Charger R/T - 03/05/19 05:13 PM

Cool Charger. My friend was able to achieve the rubber bumper look by having all the chrome plating sand blasted off of his bumpers. Then he smoothed all the edges with a DA sander, then he applied several coats of high build epoxy primer, and blocked them several times. He blasted the bolts too. Then he applied the basecoat, then several coats of clear, and left them as sprayed. This gives the bumpers a plastic coated appearance. I just bought a 71 Charger R/T that is a factory Hemi Orange car with a white top and interior, and I plan on using his procedure to do the bumpers on my car.

You guys better get crackin on that charger, looks like your co pilot is ready to go! U code 4 speed cars are my fav of them all, most power/fun,most reliable, cheaper than 6bbl or hemi, best bang for the buck in my opinion!
