Can anyone help me out with this 489 date code?

8U31 date code on a 489 case. Can anybody give me some info on this date ? Not like the normal codes

I'll take a poke at it and say it's 303rd day of 1971

is it assembled? original mopar gears? what's the date on the ring gear?

original gears were swapped out for others but they did come with the car.(late 69 i think) we are just trying to figure out if its the original case.

A12 how did you get that date? nothing we have found decodes dates that way. looked through other 489 cases we have and decoded them all no problem.

Just took a WAG to kickstart your post......usually when I or someone is so far off with a reply then questions get answers thrown at it

Wouldn't the 8-3/4 axle housing also have a date code on the (top?) left side that would be close to the 489 date code???

Looks lake August 3, 1971 to me...

thanks for the replies guys. so the "U" was possibly a filler until the month turned into a two digit (oct-dec) date?

The 303rd day of 1971 would be October 30, 1971 if that has any significance? Have you checked the date code on the axle and diff housing yet?
