Withdrawn steering wheel repair

I have 1 crack in the 12 o'clock position about a 1/4" wide. I am thinking about repairing myself and wondering if anyone has tried to do it themselves. Eastwood sells kit, and wondering what people used for the brown dye/paint and woodgrain highlight s. Did you clear it when done? Any help advice would be appreciated.
