Sliding weatherseal at front of door glass

Sliding weatherseal at front of door glass - 10/13/18 11:56 PM

My '72 Swinger needed a replacement for the sliding strip (seal at the front of the door glass). People have been complaining about the cost of replacements for a long time, when they were available at the dealer. Add my voice to the list rant

The only aftermarket one I could locate was $48.95 plus shipping, for ONE piece of thin plastic channel. realcrazy And it looks like crap and fits like it too. Doesn't even have the required slight curve so it tends to buckle.

Does anyone reproduce the proper weatherstrip? Even if I could find an OEM one it might be too brittle after 40+ years to use...

thanks
Charles

The genuine Mopar pieces were still available for like $140/pr until about a month or so ago then FCA ABRUPTLY stopped selling them. I paid nearly twice the previous price to get my hands on about a dozen sets that I've since sold. I see these now being sold for as much as $300 EACH.

The reproduction ones are fine for the "hinge" in 68-70 B body and Duster pop out windows but have heard they didn't work well in the door glass application.

I started investigating having a good reproduction made but in the very early stages.

Let us know if you do come out with them. I could use a pair. Probably quite a few other members too!

I was able to very carefully remove one from a spare passenger door, so it went on that side. But the replacement driver's door one just sucks. down

I'm glad I bought several sets years ago. And no, they are not for sale. Saving them for future projects.

I always tried to reuse originals and saved a few over the years to use when I needed them... the new ones seem to hard to put the glass up and down.

I don't even care about that so much as the size/shape/color are wrong and it tends to buckle as it curves with the window frame. down

I was able to save one original (especially after I found out how much even the crappy replacements were) but the other was toast to start with.

B-Body is still available from Chrysler.

how does it differ from A-body? Just longer? work
The replacement I bought claims to fit just about every Mopar, and I had to cut about 4" off it to match the original length.

They aren't available. There was only the one part# 2932230. It fit A, B, C and truck.

BUT if you can get some I'll take 500pcs smile

Agreed!, I bought the repros, crap... I bought the NOS ($150 at the time for a pr) they sucked too, esp on a power window set up, with new/NOS motors and refurbished tracks/slider/etc...the NOS might be ok for hand crank windows where you can muscle the glass up/down?, but definitely no go on power windows, I ended up using good used originals, both the repro and NOS seemed to have too heavy a flocking applied IMHO

I was so desperate to make the repro or NOS ones work, that I even greased them with just about any lubricant or silicone to reduce drag, but to no avail... plus it gets old real quick changing out glass slides... both the NOS and repro hit the trash can shortly after

I have used the genuine Mopar strips, as well as the reproductions.
There is one repro out there that is exact. I'll have to look at an old package to get the brand name.
The genuine Mopar strips are fine, but for some reason the white clips they include are too fat. This is what causes the windows to be tight. I have re used the original clips, and if using the clips included by Mopar, I file them down to the right dimension.

The repros and NOS ones I tried, I also played "musical chairs" with the white sliders to no avail... the only thing that worked was nice used original pcs...

Some of the reproduction glass is a bit thicker than the OEM pieces which leads to issues, especially with the reproduction channel. I am only aware of one vendor at this time that manufactures the reproduction channels that everyone sells. Some of the earlier reproduction channels was way too thick and rigid and they did get out into the market place. The current reproduction quality control standard has improved over the years and are usable, just takes more care to install vs the the OEM pieces.

OK, whoever knows the secret mfr. and a source, please share smile
(I am using an original window so thickness shouldn't be an issue.)

Most of the major vendors offer the reproductions. So you can choose the vendor of your choice. For original Chrysler pieces, you will have to do a bit more searching and be willing to pay considerably more for them. Know what your buying and who you are buying from if you decide to purchase the original pieces. If they are not in the original Chrysler blister pack, I would be cautious as the reproductions have been passed off as OEM pieces.

Try Tony's Parts for originals.

I bought a mopar set a few months back off e-bay for about $120. I too am not happy with how tight they make the glass feel moving. I tried every type of lubricant under the sun to resolve, that was not a gooey type of lube. The best one I found is good old Lock Ease in the dispenser. You can dribble it down the channel with the glass down and then work it in. It does help. And does not leave any sticky mess behind to attract dirt.

Re: Sliding weatherseal at front of door glass - 10/21/18 04:38 PM

Welp... I looked at the other door (OEM strip) and discovered I'd installed the replacement strip incorrectly. No wonder it looked so "wrong". So I removed the glass (disconnected the channel from the vent window and slid it out the top). Then attempted to compress the sides of the strip and get it into the channel from the top. I ended up boogering up the end of the strip and it won't fit with the new, thicker nylon slides either. mad It will just go in with the original slides.

I think I need to start over with another expensive piece of plastic. Don't know whether to try wrestling with another reproduction, or hope I can find a 45 year old original that won't crumble if I look at it wrong. rant

Also, I could use some advice on the proper way to remove and reinstall the window & strip. I'm thinking of removing the channel from the door entirely, putting the glass/strip into it, THEN sliding the assembly back into the door. Probably how I was supposed to do it in the first place? confused

Edited to add: I should have done more homework first smile A search of Moparts found this handy FSM excerpt posted in 2011. Looks like I should have taken the whole assembly off the door and THEN worked on it. Oh well, a $50 lesson whistling

Any pictures of these installed on the door glass before installation into the channel? Do the white clips go through one layer..... or both layers of plastic/felt liner?

Re: Sliding weatherseal at front of door glass - 11/19/19 07:44 PM

Clips go through the middle section only.
