69 a-body tires - 08/15/18 06:11 AM

My build sheet says T74 = E70x14 WSW Fiberglass. What brand and what size white stripe
Thanks

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/15/18 06:31 AM

My 21k mile MODTOP survivor came with T72 E70x14 Firestone wide oval white streaks
I'm thinking The fiberglass are the Goodyears?
First link you can see the never used original spare, 2nd link is window sticker showing T72.
I'll look into T74 more, i have a NOS set(4)of Goodyears, but i think they say polyglass on them? The white stripe would be the thin one like my spare.(same size as RED stripe)

iagree
for '69 a-body 70 series tires
polyester cord = Firestone
fiberglass-belted = Goodyear

I don't think Firestone had a fiberglass 60 or 70 series tire available as OE for any manufacturer until the '70 model year

the 70 series tires had a stripe from 5/16" to 3/8"

Thanks that's perfect, my mag article says between 1962-83 for T74. Now to find a repop.
Dave, are these the same as yours?

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/18/18 07:02 AM

it is the same tire for 1969,
is that spare from a '70 Windsor built 340 car?

AY = manufacturing date = 20th week of 1970 (mid-May)
NL = manufacturing plant = Toronto Goodyear plant

here is the website of the manufacturer of reproduction Goodyear tires: KELSEY TIRE up

http://www.kelseytire.com/pages/preformancetires2.html

it looks like F70-14s & G70-14s are available in "white streak", but they show RWL & "red streak" ONLY for E70-14, sounds like it's worth a call callme

My '69 Swinger 340 window sticker shows T74 E70x14 WSW tires, and came with
E70x14 Firestone Suprbelt red stripe bias belted polyester cord tires with fiberglass belts. The Firestone Wide Ovals that came out in '67 would squirm them- selves into oblivion in 10,000 miles or less,(usually less). My Suprbelts were pretty much used up in 40,000.

if I understand correctly,

window sticker shows T74 E70-14 WSW "white streak" fiberglass belted tires
but had a set of T75 E70-14 RSW "red streak" fiberglass belted tires (& these were Firestone SUP-R-BELT)

did you order the car or was it on a dealer's lot?
how many miles when you got it?
when did you get the Swinger?
were all 5 the same tire?

No. No switch in 69. My 69 Dart had Firestone E70-14 Redlines.

To answer your questions:(1) Correct, Tires were shown as T74 (all five), but were red stripe, which is what I ordered. (2) Mileage 6 IIRC. (3) I took delivery on 1/27/69 (after a 9 week wait). (4) Yes. Couple of other things
Dealers '69 Data Book under tires, notation"E", E70 in red or white. Fiberglass belted tires optional at extra cost. $71.80. The Broadcast sheet for my M code car shows tires as T73

My M Code is also code T73 so what is correct for the T73 code?

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/21/18 03:08 AM

T73 is the STANDARD 1969 Dart GTS tire: E70-14 "red streak" polyester cord
most probably a Firestone Wide Oval Deluxe Champion

this is the tire that only managed ~10,000 miles before they were junk as "carteravs" tells in his story. up

scope I have notes that this E70-14 tire is from a Dart, but I don't know what year blush

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/21/18 06:53 AM

Is it possible that my build sheet shows T74 but came with red streak tires being an M-code?
Posted By: 6bblgt

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/21/18 06:28 PM

it looks like for 1969:
Barracuda offered both the T74 E70-14 "white streak" fiberglass-belted & T75 E70-14 "red streak" fiberglass-belted tires

Dart offered only the T74 E70-14 "white streak" fiberglass-belted tire

shruggy

anyone have anything that shows T75 available on Dart, maybe late in the year??

"carteravs" did your Swinger come from a stand alone Dodge dealership or a Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge dealer

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/21/18 07:51 PM

My M-code notchback is coded T75, CO1 SPD (12/1/68)

So GG book states:
all these are E70x14
T72 WSW 2P/4P
T73 RSW 2P/4P
T74 WSW fiberglas
T75 RSW fibreglas

So T72, T73 are likely Firestone wide oval white and red streaks.
T74, T75 Goodyear fiberglas/polyglas.

I have a '69 340,4spd Swinger BS coded T62 which is D70x14 WSW 2P/4P
I know for a fact that GG books are not 100% correct.

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/21/18 08:12 PM

Can the red streaks be painted white?
Posted By: 6bblgt

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/21/18 09:04 PM

iagree
all these are E70x14 the BRAND in BOLD are what I've seen for OE tires on 1969 A-bodies
T72 WSW polyester cord (Firestone Wide Oval Deluxe Champion or Goodyear SPEEDWAY)
T73 RSW polyester cord (Firestone Wide Oval Deluxe Champion or Goodyear SPEEDWAY)
T74 WSW polyester cord w/fiberglass-belt (Firestone Wide Oval SUP-R-BELT or Goodyear POLYGLAS)
T75 RSW polyester cord w/fiberglass-belt (Firestone Wide Oval SUP-R-BELT or Goodyear POLYGLAS)

the "2P/4P" is the tire construction rating: "2 ply construction w/4 ply rating" & is common to all 4 of the above tires

Goodyear was the manufacturer that brought the performance 60 & 70-series fiberglass-belted tire to the car manufacturers as an OE tire during the '68 model year (428 Cobra Jet & Hurst/OLDS). Chrysler followed with POLYGLAS being STANDARD on HEMI & OPTIONAL on many other performance cars for 1969

I believe the Firestone SUP-R-BELT was not found as an OE tire until ~Jan. 1970.
I am wrong or the dealer that "carteravs" purchased his Swinger from got some SUP-R-BELTs from the local Firestone dealership to make the sale & "give the customer what he wanted".

the D70-14 WSW polyester cord tire was sales code T62

sweet tire! "blewbyu" can you get a picture of the "WIDE OVAL" & "Deluxe Champion" scripts & the imprint/molded "DOT" number?

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/23/18 09:44 PM

So another car i have is a '69 340-S, 4spd with A/C notchback(thanks Darrell). This is exactly the way the window sticker reads....
"T75 RED STREAK FIBERGLASS TIRE E70X14."

For some reason i thought that only the Firestone polyester tires were called red or white streaks?????
Posted By: big-block-dave

Re: 69 a-body tires - 08/23/18 09:54 PM

Not sure if you guys following this post realize that original Firestone tires, at least '69s that i know of, have all the writing on the inside of the stripe. The repops have the writing on the outside of the stripe.

Way back when i ordered repops for my survivor MODTOP (bought the car in Jan 2000)i received the tires and almost had a heart attack! I called Coker tire rite away and said the tires were wrong! Explained the difference where the writing was as far as the stripe.
They swore they had the "original molds" from Firestone. So somewhere in time Firestone changed over to another mold!

Anyone have any idea when this change happened?????????

My new 1969 383 Road Runner that I bought in Sept of 1969 came with fiberglass belted Firestone Wide Oval red streaks. Lasted about 3,000 miles if I remember right! The buildsheet for my 69 340S Fastback Barracuda that I just finished restoring calls out the T75 Goodyear Polyglas E70x14 redlines. Only cost me $258/each for the repros!! I don’t know why anyone would order whitewalls on a musclecar back then??

The invoice for my 69 M-Code Dart has Deluxe wheel covers also, so these are probably the cheapest tires and wheel covers available besides the dog dishes. Most people who had 440 Darts back in the day probably changed the wheels and tires a few days after they bought the car, if not the second they got it home... work

My M-code Barracuda is all black, white walls will stand out better, my opinion and the dealer who ordered it too I guess. Besides at that time we all wanted raised white letters, bigger the better, if they weren't bought that way we used the paste to color the letters in. Nobody used red paste.

I ordered the T74 WSW fiberglass tire E70-14 for my '69 Barracuda because they look a lot better than red. Red wall tires looked strange back then and still do.

Didn't order the red fender liners either.

Both the RSW and the red liners were poorly accepted by buyers back then and short lived.

Not true. I lived in those days and ordered a brand new 69 Dart with Redline tires. So did everyone else around my town who bought a muscle car back then. WSW tires where for girls cars and senior citizens. If you wanted to be cool you ordered Redlines or raised white letter tires if available. So you don't know what you are talking about. But to each there own, its your car dude, have it your way.
