Original headlights - 12/02/17 06:10 PM

Did all of the muscle era Mopars use GE headlights? And is there a way to identify the general era a GE headlight was produced?

Re: Original headlights - 12/02/17 09:19 PM

I've heard Westinghouse was also a vendor, but the numerous original '68-'69 Road Runners and Chargers I've seen & owned all had GEs in them, and all had the wide ribs on their lenses and had "GENERAL ELECTRIC" on the bottom.
They're ink-stamped on their backsides, but I never bothered decoding them. Even back in the '80s, they were hard enough to find; I used to bone them from the junkyards I visited.

Ok thanks. I just came home with a truckload of NORS sealed beams from a shop that retired.

There is also an ink date stamp.

These are the original headlights from my 68 Road Runner - still functioning. Hope they help you out.

One other variation is that superbirds had 2 ge bulbs and 2 westinghouse, cant remember for sure which were highs or lows, think highs were westinghouse.

The headlamps on my Superbird all appeared to be original with correct date codes. All 4 were Westinghouse.

These two GEs came off the passenger side of my 69 Road Runner. Anyone know how to decipher the date codes?

Re: Original headlights - 12/04/17 08:00 PM

I believe "4-8" is for April 8 1968.

Do others believe this to be correct?

That would be my guess too but didn't know for sure. Incidentally, my SPD is September 10th 1968, so perhaps a five month vendor supply time?

Re: Original headlights - 12/04/17 08:53 PM

There is also H 68 on that bulb, which could be August of 68.

Re: Original headlights - 12/05/17 01:37 AM

I checked my notes and while I can't comment on the H-68 shown on the bulb, mine did have the stamp of 3-8 on the low beams and 5-8 on the high beams. I thought I had looked up the date code guides and wrote them down as March '68 and May '68 which do fit in with my car's build date in May. I suppose they could have made a bunch of lights on March 8 (mine), April 8 (elsewhere in thread), and May 8 (mine) but I think the Month/Year makes more sense. I can pull a headlight to see if it has the H-68 as well but the car is up on the lift right now. I have a photo of the back but the lettering detail is not that clear...

The GE bulbs are just dated with month-year so 4 68 is April of 1968. When considering which type is correct, GE or Westinghouse, you need to think about WHERE your car was built. I have had a bunch of Lynch road cars and they all seem to be Westinghouse. This would include Superbirds. St. Louis cars seem to all be GE. All the musclecar area bulbs would be the wide flute design. I think the narrow flute didn't appear until 73-74 era. Also it is just needless to search for proper date codes as they are only ink stamped on the backside and you can't tell a 1965 bulb from a 1971 on the front side.

Exactly - when and where matters

LA cars I believe were Westinghouse.

I didn't think anyone within this thread stated they were actively searching for correct/matching headlight date codes? I was simply referencing the date code on mine to identify what may be an original brand/type to come on my car.

That said, can you fill me in on wide-flute versus narrow-flute head lights? Not sure what that means?

Re: Original headlights - 12/06/17 01:55 AM

It had to do with the pattern on the face of the bulb lens. The pattern on the face will focus the light as it passes through the glass. I'm hoping someone finds a good picture of the two different styles side-by-side and post it. The narrower/tighter pattern that they developed later on would focus the light a little farther out and you might see them advertised as +40 bulbs because they would supposedly give you 40 extra feet of driving light...

here are the 2 lamps with wide and narrow flutes. Top photo is narrow. The bottom one is one from my Superbird. For interest, the date code stamped on the back is 6-9 (June 1969)
