What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 07/07/17 09:28 AM

Just wondering what this group thinks?

What is the rarest C-Body from 1965 to 1973?

I tend to lean towards the Hurst 300 models, esp the vert

I would guess those with a factory 4-speed.

My guess, without researching a few "1-of-None's" that may or may notexist, would be a 70 Sport Fury 440-6 pak V-code.

Actually 3 proposed by Chrysler marketing, 2 ordered by Chrysler, only ONE built by Hurst, so in my book it's the rarest...

The 70 Sport Fury GT's are perhaps the "sweetest" looking C bodies

Re: What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 07/07/17 06:34 PM

I built my own 70 300Hurst ragtop (hence the A12rag) . . . and have seen 3 others that were put together . . . I think that because the 300Hurst cars are still out there, the 70 Sport Fury GT 440-6 pak V code would be rarest ??? Although I have seen a few 4door stick cars, factory. And how about a 70 fury I, 4door, slant six, with 3 on the tree ! Who would have ordered that ?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

As was mentioned before, ANY C body that escaped the derby wrath !!!

Just my 2cents . . .

Cheers,

Some of the rarest are the 300 Hurst, especially the convertible, 440-6 GT's and the 65 Sport Fury Convertible 426W 4-Speed cars.

The rarest would be the Pilot 65 Fury III 426 Street Hemi car, the Street Hemi was being considered for the C-Body line up in 66, but shelved and only put in the B-Body. The 65 Street Hemi Coronet (B-Body) and 65 Fury (C-Body) supposedly lived around the same time.

In a local wrecking yard around here there was a 67 Sport Fury, L code, convert 4 speed. Can't have been to many of those made.

Rumor is that a 1970 Hurst prototype will be at the Hurst reunion in Carlisle next week. From what I heard, it is a bit different than the production units.

Re: What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 07/08/17 12:04 AM

I am not well educated on the 65's and cant say as to any possible Hemis,
so , other than that , only two examples of rare AND extremely valuable come to mind . The 1970 300 Hurst convertibles , and the 1970 Sport Fury GT 440+6 . A nice example of either one could fetch some serious money from the right collector . If a guy had deep pockets and wanted to collect one example of each of Plymouth's Rapid Transit System from 1970, he's going to need a
Sport Fury GT, and of course the 440+6 would be the one to get. Problem is, just try to find one . They built what , about 61 or so ? but only about ten known to exist on planet earth right now , and about 7 or 8 of those are basket cases..Probably one of the most under valued and under appreciated cars in the world of Mopars.
And while we are on the subject, people, please stop calling Plymouths 'six packs' that's a Dodge only term . We call Plymouths "Six Barrels" .

Re: What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 07/08/17 10:53 PM

I owned a 440 6 BBL RoadRunner back in the day from early 1972 to 1997 and another one from 2004-2015 and always called them Six Pack RoadRunners regardless of the name on the hood. If you called it a six pack RoadRunner or a sixpack Bee, everyone knew it was a Plymouth or a Dodge respectively. The term "six pack" is just the common description for any Mopar with three 2's. It was never a debate back then for us old school owner's (and I know you are old school too). My recollection is that we mostly called them all six packs and I feel newer owners/collectors, who weren't hanging out at McD's looking for a street race or racing it at the track on the weekend only know them in the modern era by the name badge on the hood. A sixpack is a sixpack plus it sounds sexier than calling it a sixbbl. It's really not necessary to be politically correct about Plymouths and Dodges. stirthepot

Re: What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 07/09/17 03:08 AM

I have always thought it was cool that every division had a name for everything , Same color, but Dodge called it this and Plymouth called it that . Same with Ford and Mercury , or Buick , Olds , Pontiac, Chevrolet etc.
It's what makes them unique , sets them apart from the crown .
People spent a lot of time coming up with those unique ad campaigns and slogans , like "white hat special" that's Dodge, not Plymouth .
Scat pack applies to Dodge, Rapid Transit system is Plymouth .
I am the kind of person that always tries to call it what it is , not what the sheep say . That's just me . But, people are always going to call Super Commandos "Magnums" they are going to call Dodge N96 ramcharger hoods "airgrabbers' , people will always call magazines "clips"
People will always call Detroit lockers, twin grips and sure grips by the GM "posi" term and six barrels will always be called six packs by 99% of the population .
I am certainly not trying to be "politically correct", just simply correct ,
or at least reasonably close as often as possible.
That's just me . Your results may vary .
To me when I hear someone refer to a Plymouth as a six pack, it sounds exactly the same as it they said they were going to the Plymouth dealer
to look at all the new Scat pack cars ...it just doesn't jive man .
I guess when you do this Mopar gig every day in one aspect or another for over 30 years, you just get set in your ways.
I am still going to cringe when I see a 69 GTX with a 440 magnum pie tin on the air cleaner . Dat ain't right . Don't even get me started on Plymouths with bumble bee stripes ...

IMHO, 3,5,15 or 64, it still can't hold a candle to the 1 of 1 Hurst 300 vert for "rarity", which is the OP's objective

And in the looks dept between a 70 vs 71 Sport Fury GT, the 70 is the cat's meow hands down...

Can't argue any of that, but did they make any 70 Sport Fury GT six barrels? Oh wait, GG lists 61 made.

I agree the 300H vert is tree rareist

Don't know how many were produced(consensus says but a handful)but in the past 10 or so years of ownership have not found proof of another still in existence or any that went to the bone yard.......1965 Dodge Monaco 426W with a 4 speed. As far as any one can tell it may be(but who truly knows)the only one left in existence. Have the Chrysler Historical docs to prove she is the real deal. Still waiting to see proof of another...... Valuable? To some maybe, maybe not. Rare....probably in the top 5 or worst top 10 list for rarity.

When I was a kid my Dad had a dark blue 65 Monaco Custom 880 with a 426 Wedge but his was an automatic with bucket seats & console floor shifter. Every Monaco or Polara I ever see always has a column auto. I remember he had some sort of proof & documentation that it was an Ex F.B.I. car. I still can remember how fast it seemed for such a big car. It was just before my driving age & he traded it off for a Family station Wagon!!!! Wish I could have bought it from him to this day.

I tend to agree with you Dan. Billy: The reason that Dan Corley's two(and probably even more than those) were built as T code cars was BECAUSE the V code option was still available until the end of August of 1970(the cancellation date for any 1971 V code Sport Fury's). Whether any were actually built is probably still unknown, but the fact that they WERE a legitimate option, and the striping for them is in any 1970-71 parts book, proves that they were known to be available, even if it was only for a month.
The T and V codes were both carry overs from the 1970 model year. As of Sept. 1, 1970, both were discontinued and the U code replaced them. At least these facts, along with actual part numbers for striping, etc. are in your parts book. More than can be said for a 70 Hurst convertible.

I think there are rarer C-bodies built than what's been listed. I think there's been too much emphasis on sportier models when I think the rarest would be the lesser trim levels and/or more pedestrian body styles.

How about this Diego:

1969 Plymouth Fury Snapper. 440 HP L code Snapper. Possibly the rarest?

Back in the early 90's, Jim Manning Chrysler Dodge in Dinuba California had a gold 300L convertible 4-speed combo on their used car lot. Pretty sure there were not too many of those. The 413 had been replaced with a 440, so I passed the opp to purchase.

Well, you're comparing bodystyle/engine/tranny and adding a vinyl top? Not quite an apples to apples comparison.

Anyway, here's a quick view of some of the rarest in the White Book:

1968 Sport Fury ragtop "regular" 440: 2
Same with 383-2 and 3-speed: 4

1968 Fury III with 383-2 and 3-speed: 4

1968 Fury II 2-door sedan 440HP: 3
Same with 383-4 and 4-speed: 4
Same with 383-2 and 3-speed: 3

1968 Fury I with 383-4 and 4-speed: 3

I had a 1968 Chrysler Town and country long roof. Was loaded to the hilt. 440, had rear A/C, rear facing seat, factory dual exhaust, stereo tape player, auto pilot, tilt and tele column, power EVERYTHING, roof rack! Can't be many like that produced.

So there is no breakdown of the 69 Polara 500 convertible with a 383 and 3-speed on the tree, I almost bought one for the pedals. The car was a driver and it ended up driving down to Florida from Illinois. If someone has the breakdown of the 69 Polara's and Monaco's lets see it! scope

Currently the updated White Book is 1966-68. I've never seen any 1969 numbers.

Re: What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 08/04/17 05:22 PM

I do, but it's not the most updated one, and I've never seen any info that suggests the most up-to-date 1969-71 book has C-body numbers beyond general production.

I'm sure someone on here can confirm.

Does the white book have numbers on 1968 Fury III four door hardtop with 383-4 and 4 speed? And 1968 Fury III Convertible 383-4 with 4 speed?

Thanks

1968 Fury III four door hardtop with 383-4 and 4 speed: just shows automatics at 932 US-spec cars.

1968 Fury III Convertible 383-4 with 4 speed: 25 US-spec

I tend to agree with you Dan. That would also be good explanation for why Dan C's two early promo 71s were both T code 71s, rather than U code cars like the rest of the 71s. ..."Well if we are going to cancel the V code 71s (we only sold 61 last year anyway) lets go ahead and upgrade the 4bbl cars from T to U for 71....." imaginary conversation from the top floor guys at Chry/Ply...

The fact that Dan's two "T" code 71 Sport Fury GT's exist, and probably another couple, means that the "V" code 71 was indeed available until the end of August, when it was officially cancelled. The two "T" codes that Dan had were the base model, so to speak of 1971 GT's. The optional one was a "V" code until the end of August, both of Dan's cars are August 1970 builds. Whether any were built, who knows, but the fact is: It was possible to order one in that month time period, if you wanted one. Even the parts book for 1971 shows a complete striping for the hood specifically showing either 440 or 44+6. In my mind, that is more evidence that they were indeed available, if you wanted to order one.

Car is long gone.

I own1 of the rarest C-body!! 1969 Dodge Monaco 500 Convertible DP27L9..... 1 of 2 made with a 440. The other one is a K code 440 so he has the only K-code and I have the only L code. on top of that the Monaco 500 were built and sold only in Canada.

Cool! I sold my 69 Monaco 500 convertible last year, only a 318 auto but all of them are rare. I used to own a 69 Polara 500 convertible L code and wish I still had both of them... frown

Here's an excerpt from the 6/70 1971 Plymouth order sheet. Would this have been the order sheet version in place for August of 1970? Was there a revision after this version? Am I missing something under the engine codes? How could/would one order the E87 version?

A buddy scrapped it nervous

Any ideas as to where the 65 Fury III 426 Hemi Pilot Car actually is, or does it exist?

I heard it still existed without badges. In Michigan I believe. I read that they cast 2 sets of exhaust manifolds. I would like to see them and see what they looked like.

Re: What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 03/27/24 03:26 AM

While not the rarest C body, my old '69 300 convertible is rare.
Chrysler produced only 1,933 convertible 300's that year.
I don't know if there is a breakdown between 375hp TNT 440's...
vs...350 HP 440's built.

Re: What is the rarest C-Body? 1965-1973 - 03/27/24 05:51 PM

I used to have a 1968 Chrysler 300 convertible.
Black with red interior, white top, 440 auto TNT car.
I have yet to come across another one in same color combo, In ANY engine combination. And have only found maybe 3 or 4 drop tops that were TNT cars.

Unfortunately, I lost it in a fire several years back and the burnt hulk was junked. Still have the fender tag as a reminder though!

Funny you should say that. We got a striped 300 Hurst car that someone stole the drivetrain out of and only left front brakes, hood and trunklid. Parted what was left and gave it to my derby buddy who got three runs out of it. Was said to be a rare care because it had a center console and performance axle package.
