Very interesting list.

Would these cars have 801 and 802 SPDs?

Re: w23 recall wheel list - 07/03/17 07:14 PM

Plymouth issued a notice about the wheels no longer being available on Sept 6, 1968 - more info at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/PIBs/1969/pib_3_page2.jpg

Four days later on Sept 10, 1968, this letter was sent out - http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/imag...209-10-1968.jpg

A week later on Sept 17th, 1968, another notice was sent - http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/imag...el%20recall.jpg

On December 13th, they were officially cancelled. More info at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/PIBs/1969/pib_8.jpg

SPDs were never intended to be actual build dates, so I am sure there are early cars with the wheels from a few different SPDs.

Still have a broadcast sheet from a 69 GTS 340 that I parted out, cut it up with a torch! About a week later I decided to decode the sheet and found out it was a W23 car... realcrazy

Where did this come from? Curious how the XX29 cars could have any, since there builds where at, but really after the letters. Would seem that Dodge would not let them leave Creative even if they had those wheels on at the time.

It's in the list but early XX cars had XS VINs so I don't think you are getting a breakdown between R/Ts / 500s / Daytonas

Re: w23 recall wheel list - 07/04/17 08:41 PM

the list is based on the US shipped OPTION & ACCESSORY REPORTS

cars "scheduled" to be built with the "RECALL" wheels would make the list whether or not they were actually installed or removed before shipping to a dealership.

the "RECALL" was before the cars were "officially" available for sale - none should've been sold to a retail customer

there were 6 Charger 500s "scheduled" before the wheel recall - ALL HEMI
and assumedly the reason for pics like this one scope

Those wheel, covers are cool. My neighbors growing up had a 69 Monaco with those on it, 383 4bbl, the exhaust note always sounded good. I wonder if it was a recall wheel car that got those put on it. Or if it had H wheels under them??

Dan, are you sure no cars were devivered to the customer with W23 wheels installed?

NO

the recall notice went out to the dealerships before the cars were to be "officially" for sale - so they would've had sufficient time to honor the notice of recall (if they were letter of the law abiding dealerships) - but some dealers sold cars before they were supposed to also

I'd bet there was some small percentage of W23 cars built/delivered/sold/driven on their original wheels - I'd also doubt any late-August/early-September W23 spec'd cars left the factory w/recall wheels installed

Wasn't the official public offering/sale of the 1969 models on September 7th 1968?

Does the 56 number of XS29/XX29 Charger R/T & 500 also include XP29 Chargers? Because I have a XP29H9 Charger with a SPD of 9/02 that is coded for W23 wheels.

no, the number does not include XP29s

the way the numbers (& its purpose) were kept by Chrysler was to track OPTION installation rates - the OPTIONS & ACCESSORY REPORT shows 0.0% for the base V8 XP29 Charger with W23 "cast center ROAD wheels"

..... but based on the 65,068 US spec. '69 V8 XP29s built - any production number under 33 units will still equal 0.0%

my understanding of how the numbers were calculated would lead to:
47-65 1969 CHARGER R/T & 500 w/W23 (US spec.)
&
0-32 1969 CHARGER w/W23 (US spec.)

total 47-97 1969 CHARGERs w/W23 (US spec.)

can you share pics of the b'cast sheet?

I know of a Canadian 69 Barracuda Formula S 340 that still has its original recall wheels on it. Something about the original owner throwing a fit about it so they left them on.

I did not think any were scheduled builds before Aug28 for C500s. Aug 28 is the date in the letter that Chrysler states as last Date they may have still been on car leaving factory.

Re: w23 recall wheel list - 07/23/17 09:11 PM

the first 6 HEMI Charger 500s were "SCHEDULED" 8/21/68

I don't know when they were built or how long they were at Creative shruggy but I'd guess NONE of them had "recall" wheels on them when they were shipped to a dealership
