Challenger SE Tail Panel

Challenger SE Tail Panel - 10/14/16 07:38 PM

Does anyone repop the SE tail panel? I don't think so, but figured I'd ask.

If not, any recommendations on to whom I can send mine to get it restored? Mine has a few dings and was shoddily painted black over the original textured argent.

No one repops those.
There are a few places you can talk to about restoring yours. I think Special T's would do them. Also that MCB place in MI might.

Probably any good trim shop could remove the dents, I myself had a few done at MCB, they came out well and the price was reasonable. The argent paint that was used doesn't really match the original, mainly the texture, but that's because the ingredients for the original formula are scarce and any remaining paint is expensive these days. The common argent paints in use today just aren't made the same way. One thing you could do is have the panel restored and then paint it yourself using some of Frank Badalson's paint if you want a more authentic appearance.

I used MCB to do my Barracuda grilles/headlights. They came out nice but weren't cheap. Maybe because of the work involved as compared to an SE panel.

Metro did have an SE 70 Challenger repro rear tail panel many years/decades ago, however their shop fire destroyed the tooling to continue making these, they had proposed a new release, but that fell short, they are no longer in the Mopar repro market offering anything as of late, the E body interior panels being their last marketing offer...there's always a chance some vendor/customer has one sitting on a shelf?...but for now, NO$ or used/reconditioned is your best bet if yours is too damaged

I bought an NOS one in the box back in 1988 at the Papas Dodge show in Farmington Connecticut. The guy had about twenty of them new in the boxes. If I had known they would sell for $1500 each today I would have bought all of them. I paid $99.00 for it back then.

From past experience make sure the restored SE tail panel fits, perfectly, before you have the car painted. I do not know a way to change the SE tail panel to fit if it is too long, or slightly misshapen from hammering.

Thanks. I was able to pick up a NOS panel recently. Haven't tried to put it on yet. Luckily, my 1/4s haven't been cut in the panel mounting area or need to be.
