A-Body Front Parking Brake Cable Routing

This is a continuation of a previous thread that showed the routing of 69 Barracuda parking brake cables aft of the torsion bar cross member.

These following photos show the front cable from under the dash, through the firewall, through a hidden crevice to the torsion bar cross member. This car is a 69 Barracuda 340 4-speed with torque boxes which makes the routing slightly more complicated, because the front p-brake cable passes through the front left torque box.

Parking brake front cable.

Photo 1 shows the front cable and grommet as factory installed and before removal. Note that the rear end of the cable goes under the floor pan and between the frame rail and inner fender. The round hole at top center of the photo is where the cable enters the firewall.

Photos 2 and 3 show re-assembly of the front cable and grommet from firewall to under the car.

The threaded rod exits from the hidden hole into the torque box, if you have one. The rear face of the torque box has a large exit hole, but the P-brake rod may not go into that hole without help. You may need to insert a short section of thin wall tubing or conduit to catch the rod and bring it out of the hole. Or devise another plan to get the rod out of the torque box.

Photo 1 shows the front left torque box with the rear face at the top of the photo. The large hole at top center of the photo is the exit hole for the P-brake threaded rod. From this hole it enters the torsion rod cross member.

Photo 3 shows the cable exiting the torque box to the rear. From here the cable enters the torsion rod cross-member.

Photo 4 shows the cable exiting the torsion rod cross member, far left of photo. The cables are continued in the previous thread mentioned above.

Back to the first photo, these two pins are critical parts of the under dash assembly.

Nice pictures. You show an interesting E-brake detail that I wasn't aware of. It looks like the dash bracket was installed onto the frame before it was painted. The bracket in your picture looks green. I can see how sliding a pin and retainer into place would be easier to assemble on the line, instead of having to tighten a nut underneith the dash frame.

Yes, the P brake handle bracket was bolted to the dash frame before paint. Same for the glove box hinge, because the attaching screws were painted.

The glove box door and the ash tray cover were painted loose and attached later, because their fasteners are unpainted.

Photo shows glove box hinge and door. The hinge screws at bottom are painted, and the top row of screws attaching the door to the hinge are not painted.

Oh, and the joy of hooking all that up under that dash. With the interior out it was still a bear getting under there.

Just curious, is there a reason for putting the old cable back in?

Used the old one only for figuring out re-assembly and making photos. Now I know how to install the new one - I suspected but didn't actually know the details about the hidden crevice until somebody asked for help.

Next time I won't buy a new cable without trying to restore the old one first.
