Just a taste of what is to come!

Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/01/09 08:44 PM

I am very excited to announce that my latch restoration service is just about ready to go.
I managed to prepare my first sample for all to judge. Please keep in mind the following:
Pictures do not convey the true colors but I tried to snap the best shots possible.
Also please remember that plating 30 plus years ago has oxidized and will not look like freshly
plated parts. This is as close as I managed to get in copying the finish and I am quite pleased.
All comments are welcome.
Once I get a rad hood latch completed I will launch the service in the New Products/Service section of moparts.
Thank you to all my clients for their patience. It has taken over 10 months of research to get here.
Jules

The way I read it it's a restoration service rather than new latches for sale???

It looks OK I guess.............10 months, can't you work faster?

Trick now will be to find nice cores....No more $2 items 4 U

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/01/09 09:43 PM

This service will be for all who want to have their hood latches, safety catches and trunk latches done
correctly ie: taken completely apart and plated in the correct finishes, new hardware and correct yellow
grease. Typically what is done is that the whole assembly is just dunked in plating tanks and the result
is a monotone finish. It also means that the lubrication is removed in the process and it is not that easy to
get it back between rubbing parts. What you get when you disassemble everything is a finished product that
not only works perfectly but can also withstand OE judging.

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/01/09 09:46 PM

Nice Jules. i can appreciate the effort required. It takes MONTHS of searching for my materials. Then begging to have a large company actually sell to me. I tell them I know I'm small but don't plan on staying that way. The VP of sales from the company I buy my gray material from actually called to congratulate me on purchases and obvious growth.

Stuff looks great as expected

Alan,
I'll make sure you get special pricing when I do some for you.
Here is a before shot of what is typically inside a hood latch before cleaning.
New rivets and washers are used in the rebuild.
Credits and thanks will be mentionned in the New Products section.
The after shot will be in about 10 days.

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/02/09 12:07 AM

Jules, when you posted about doing latches previously I asked if you were going to do more than just 70-71 E-body latches like is mentioned in you sig picture...I didn't geyt a response...Now your example photo shows as a 70 Charger...Hopefully that means you'll be doing other body style latches..

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/02/09 12:08 AM

Alan,
I never said that.
Look at the picture of the trunk latch I did.
The springs are black, the swivel is natural pot metal.
The rest is clear zinc.
Disregard the galvanized front plate. That was an over the counter part.

Sorry if I did not get back to you.
Since I am in the very beginning stages of this service I am still learning.
I have enough research in 70-71 e body latches and I am gathering more and more
info on b bodies. I will be expanding in the near future. So far I am good to go
with 68-71 b body hood latches. I am still working on the release levers.

Jules, I'm looking for some of that correct yellow grease....is it a secret formula or something over the counter I can buy. I have some of the Eastwoods "Heavy Duty Anti Rust" i.e. cosmoline in a can which worked great on my lower control arms but it also has similar look to that yellow grease. Any suggestions.

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/23/09 12:45 AM

You forgot the orange paint?
I can prove from several samples that I've personally dismantled that these parts usually always got body colour paint on them, typically when the cars were repainted in the late 70's early 80's....
In fact in the 80's I've also documented that some were actually chrome plated....

Nice try though.........

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/23/09 01:07 AM

Looks great..

The only "criticism" is that upon seeing nice originals you will normally find that the rivets that hold the mechanism together are silver cad or zinc plated as they(hood mechanism components) were probably plated before assembly- not after?? But I see that it would be virtually impossible to replicate this process without destroying the part. And then where would you even find the correct rivets and press to do this anyway?

All good in my book though.

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/23/09 02:00 AM

HPMike ,
those are brand new rivets in clear silver zinc finish.
The picture does not show them well.
The rivets are clear zinc, the washers are clear zinc, the springs are black, the balance is the correct
brown finish.
I take the latches completely apart and each piece is done individually. That also ensures that the workings are
correctly lubricated in the correct yellow grease.

Re: Just a taste of what is to come! - 02/24/09 12:18 AM

Thank you very much guys for the compliments.
Concerning the variations on the washers the answer is yes.
I have come across green tint, red tint, black plating and clear zinc.
I also have nos latches and safety hooks as well as the pictures members
have so graciously emailed me. I had a decision to take and I decided to
do them as what I believe to be factory assembly parts. It would seem that
the nos ones would be over the counter but I am not positive at this point.
Typically what I will do is check the clients' part with some investigative
observation and proceed from there. I will entertain special needs but I
have to try and contain the variations in order to control the costs and
inventory of parts.
I did a 71 Roadrunner rad latch today. Look at the differences from the above
latch. Tomorrow I will do an NOS duplicate with red rivets and another with green.

Thanks Mike.
I have noticed that about some nos latches out there.
The backs are galvanized.
To date all the latches I have received from clients cars have the brown finish on the back plate.
I will be going with the assembly line finishes. I would not be able to get the back plates galvanized in the
checker pattern anyway because they were stamped from already galvanized sheets of steel.
Thanks

Can one of you fine experts here tell me what is the proper safety (secondary) latch for a 70 Challenger R/T with a Rallye hood? Is it the "pull ring" style (release by pulling to the front of the car), or a flat tab style (release by pressing up). Any guidance is appreciated, since I have both parts.
