Restoring/Repairing 1970 OEM Paint...??? - 01/25/16 06:24 AM

OK.....after LONG...thinking about it, I am seriously considering having someone make the attempt to refinish, repair, restore (whatever) the FJ5 paint on my car if it is restorable...??

After seeing a bunch of examples on TV of the jobs that some have done to bring back the luster of 40 & 50 year old factory paint...I think I might be interested in letting someone give it a shot...?

I do not know anyone who has the skills to do this work and whoever I choose to work on my car, I want the best person or persons for the job.

How pricey is this process??

Thx.

If your car is a survivor level car you want to be careful with it, you don't want to buff out the orange peel or burn through paint that has thinned (much of it was thin when new). I'd haul it over to Roger Gibson for that work.

It pretty much is in survival condition for the most part so I would like to give it a shot.

Roger Gibson??

Contrary to what some TV shows would have you think Roger Gibson is probably at the top of the list for being correct on Mopar Restorations for the last 30 years.

Not as close to you, but Restorick (Rick Kreuziger) here on Moparts is the only guy I would trust with original paint...............

I agree, Restorick would be another good choice, and my list of trusted O.E. paint restoration guys is VERY short.

I think there is a guy over in East Tn. that Ted Stephens uses. He told me about him for my 70 Duster but I decided to leave my car alone for now.

I just had a 13,000 66 Hemi Coronet in the shop for an engine compartment do over and a detail of the OE paint. As has been said after many years of use and waxing the paint gets real thin. Great time and patience is needed but it can be saved to the extent that is possible. This is a labor intensive deal so can be a bit pricey. You screw up there is no turning back.

Well if you want to put that US exchange rate to use Jeff Cabot and myself can do that job.

All the comments above are very true. The approach on these cars must be in the hands of people who know going to far is NOT and option.

If any paint work is required it has to be done so it cannot be noticeable and kept to a minimum.

Scott, here a few before. The car was heavily street raced back in the day. 20+ holes in the wonderful engine compartment were filled.

Outer panels done. The only paint work on the car was in front of the rear wheelwells. They were trimmed for bigger tires back in the day. Car is a WE 4 speed and I think one the best bodies for a Street Hemi. I have the same basic job coming on a black 69 Hemi Bee. Looking forward to that!

I don't mind giving it a try as I know it may be a coin toss but I definitely want it to be in the best hands possible because like someone said....you really only have one shot at it because if you skimp on the talent level...you can't go back..... Ain't no do overs.....
