correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/12/15 12:54 AM

Hello, I'm trying to do the finishing touches on a 71 340 Cuda i just restored. Does anybody know where i can get some good survivor pictures for inspection marks and what not.. Taking her to the MCACN show next week and i'd like her to be detailed somewhat correct.

The only way to know what was correct for your car is to document what it had to start with & then duplicate them.

No two cars are exactly the same but your car was there when it was built, so it is the best firsthand witness you could ever have.

Let's say for the sake of argument this car was not a unrestored, untouched original car and i could not document every square inch of it....
What i'm looking for are some universal things they did on all Cuda's or most of them. I'm not trying to change the world, just looking for a few detail items.

Most want to tell you to Document your original and the rest will tell you stuff but never take the time to grab a camera for you.
You'll probably fair better than I did last week trying to get help .

The board comes together for some but not all.

Quite a few photos of the R.J. Reynolds heir's 2,000 mile '71 Hemi 'Cuda here:

But their server isn't working now and won't scroll through the photos for this car or any of their cars. Maybe they'll fix it?

Dave, this is the Blake family's car. They are getting it ready for the MCACN show so you'll see it there. Bryan is fast track assembling and detailing it this week in prep for the show and admits while not perfect, he did it faithful to the original details he found while disassembling it and it's pretty darn close, definitely close enough for what you are doing. Hopefully these pics will help. One item I'd probably go with is a black rather than a natural sway bar as Blake's is.

Re: correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/15/15 04:08 AM

Keep in mind, I mirror Alaskan_TA's thoughts on the subject concerning every car being unique. I posted these to give Dave some help on the car he's working on due it not having a lot of detail history to refer to, so please take that into consideration when viewing the above pics.

Bryan made every effort to duplicate what he found, some of which were VERY minute clues through rusty dirty 40 year old original parts. He makes no claim that every detail is accurate, it's just as accurate as he could make it based on what he found on his car. He was also in a bit of a rush getting the car prepared for the MCACN show next week, some small detail mistakes will be corrected later. The K-member bolts were daubed with green because he found a very small chip of green paint remaining on one bolt. Was it a mistake? Did they all have green? How much did they have before it all wore off? These are some questions we will likely never know the entire answer to. .02

Re: correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/16/15 02:13 AM

Looks excellent, thanks for the pics. not nitpikn'..Look at the plug wires, why did they move the #1 wire 180 degrees around on the cap? Question, do the judges look at this?
Posted By: ScottSmith_Harms

Re: correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/16/15 04:22 AM

He was messing with the plug wires, not done yet. The reproduction wires have some major length and fitment issues, especially #3 and #8. It's a giant PIA that Electric Limited (the manufacturer) should address! Car has been in the Blake family for many years, just now restoring it.

Re: correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/16/15 04:36 AM

Yes, I was thinking the lengths might be the deal, it looks odd like it is. Do the judges look at the wire position, and the distributor clocking? Like during the O.E. Judging?
Posted By: ScottSmith_Harms

Re: correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/16/15 05:16 AM

Nanket, I can't speak for all of the judging bodies but the answer is generally yes. Every aspect of any car being judged is considered during judging against any known production line original information available on said car. Also to consider were accepted variables in many of the areas being judged (in the case of plug wire positioning, I'm sure there were some variances).

Re: correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/17/15 03:47 AM

What's crazy is I work at Chrysler, years ago I worked at the axle plant. One day for the heck of it I took a stroll to see what type of inspection marks the axle's wore today.. It was a Sunday so i rolled right up to the finshed axles at the end of the assembly line, the very first completed axle I saw had "White Power" written across it.. Our plant had just shipped 500+ axles that were bad to Dodge truck, the plant manager was pissed and wanted everything triple checked so there were racks and racks of axles with 30+ marks on them. They ran out of the bingo dabbers so most of the marks were done with paint pens, all colors....
Now on to the rolls and rolls of more finished axles... Our paint line went down so they were having the painters paint them by hand. Well, these axles showed no inspection marks but if you looked real close you can see the paint lifting where the inspection marks were placed under the paint. Add in the fact everything today is more uniform than it was 40 years ago... Fast forward 20 years from now and your restoring a Dodge truck. There's a guy telling you the dot on the pinion yoke is suppose to be orange and exactly 13/16's wide and 1 3/16 long or it's incorrect.. Just seems weird when your in a factory and see how it's really done.

Re: correct inspection marks 71 Cuda - 11/18/15 03:43 PM

I'm pretty sure that the Blake family restored the car, at least the drive train and reassembly protion, I'm not sure about the paint and body.
