RAAAAAAARE BARN (garage)FIND R/T

RAAAAAAARE BARN (garage)FIND R/T - 11/06/15 12:50 AM

Okay guys, My brother just found and bought a 1968 Coronet R/T. 440 4 bbl. 4 speed Dana 60, bucket seat, non console, non ralley dash with the square tach, 27,000 original miles, one owner, Gold with verticle stripe(non R/T stripe), non vynil roof, black interior, am radio, real survivor. Car has original spark plugs, all wax markings are there, this car is like a time capsule. It has all original motor tranny rear everything exept the heater hoses and original tire. We have restored a lot of MOPARS in our time but this is different for us. We don't know really how to clean it up, need a gas tank but don't know if we should replace with NOS or fix the original. We have a bunch of questions as to what to do with the car and what it is worth. I will post some pics as I get them. Just looking for some advise as to how to handle this TRUE survivor? Thanks in advance. And yes it runs and drives beautifully every gauge and light works. It was an early car and still has the shifter with the T pull up for reverse that works great. All help, suggestions and opinions are welcome.

4 speeds were only about 15% of the production on the coronet rt's in 1968.
That's a rare find in survivor condition!

First rule of thumb DON'T do anything until you know exactly what to do! No cleaning, no dropping gas tanks, nothing more than safely getting it to your shop. The hardest details to pickup from such finds are the ones lost in the first clean up attempts by well meaning but uneducated owners....seriously!

You'll get some good help here on Moparts up

I'm with Scott Smith on this one. A car can only be original once. Restored isn't original. Don't be in a hurry, such a car is irreplaceable and it's a time capsule. Anything you do to it will decrease its originality and subsequently, value. There are plenty of cars out there to "do what you want" with. Your barn find may pay for 2 or 3 of them.

Great find!! up Looking forward to seeing pics.

I am not sure what you mean by "non R/T stripe". Standard R/T stripe shown below. That is not what the car has? shruggy

Is the fender tag on the car?
What plant was it built and what's the spd?
What wheels/caps was the car ordered with?
I'm with the others on being very careful with the car.
Get a binder, a stack of card files and box for them, a high res digital camera with a macro mode.
Everything that is on the car should be documented including all numbers and date codes of all parts (if present). Chip off a sample of each inspection mark paint color of any parts removed and make notes on a file card where it's from and tape the sample (in a piece of plastic wrap) to the file card.
I find it nice to get a factory service manual and parts manual and organize your photos, binder and file cards parallel to the sections in the books. It makes it much easier to find later.
Also worth mentioning is avoid any thoughts of steam or pressure washing, or harsh chemicals when doing any cleaning.
Also make note of the "sheen" of all paints and pattern of all seam sealers, sound deadner, blackout treatment, primer and over spray.
Hesitate doing much on a car like this other than preserving what is there.

"All help, suggestions and opinions are welcome."

What was the purchase price? This will help others that may happen across similar situations in the future.

Frank Badalson is probably one of the most knowledgeable people out there when it comes to Mopar survivors. You should give him a call. He'd be very interested in the car based on your description and would be a great resource for questions about preserving/improving the car.

Just a beltline twin-pinstripe, I believe. This document says it was standard:

Re: RAAAAAAARE BARN (garage)FIND R/T - 11/09/15 11:57 PM

op may have wanted to write horizontal or longitudinal stripe. Diego your brochure is correct. On other literature, iirc, it's written the r/t's come with the bumble bee stripe, thin body side, or no stripes; any option was no-charge. An example of the body side stripe (thick/thin] can be found on andy440's site. <-click

I for some reason can't send pics. This is also posted on Dodgecharger.com. Sorry. I am computer illiterate and the other site allows me to post pics. Thanks. Graybo
