1972 Road Runner fender engine callout

1972 Road Runner fender engine callout - 10/31/15 05:10 PM

Working on a 72 Road Runner / GTX. The car has an Air Grabber hood.
I am not sure if there should be an engine call out on the fender.
Dave Patik of Performance Car Graphics says that there should be one but I can not find it anywhere in the Factory parts book so that leads me to believe there would not be one.
Some others say there should be one and, if there is one, should it be on the lower rear fender below the GTX emblem?

Picture of original cars or a factory engineering drawing would be awesome!!!!

Thanks, Mark

i am no expert but i do own a 72 roadrunner with a air grabber hood.
they put 400 engine decals on the fenders above the side markers on 72 roadrunners with air grabber hood. my car had one when i bought it 20+ years ago.
I am not sure about a 440 in the same spot on the gtx.

I think there should be a gtx emblem on the 1/4 panel above the lower body line by the door.
i have seen road runner emblems in this spot also on gtx's. i don't know if it's correct.
and i don't think there were any engine decals or emblems on the 1/4's at all.

Show me where they show the engine callouts on a 72 in chrysler paperwork or parts book pages. I have never seen it and have had and looked at numerous cars that do not have them. Other than ones put on by owners or dealers when they were new.

I too am "working" on a '72 RR/GTX. Is there ANY factory paperwork mentioning the 1972 440-GTX & Road Runner relationship? scope

I've always wondered if the "V-code" '72 is a RR/GTX. Never heard it described that way. work
There could also be St. Louis VS. Windsor and early/late differences.

Dan, This is the 72 V code car I am working on.....Would almost have to be a RR/GTX as that is the only way to get a 440 in 72, correct?
As for your research, are your above pics of an original paint car?
This car had been painted earlier in life so that history is gone.
Just doing some addition research on this in a 1976 Mitchell crash book. Only shows the engine call out decal in 1971, does not show it for 72.

The HT6 4-spd GTX is the car that Gas Monkey had & was not original paint. I believe the green 4-spd GTX is/was original paint, it was on eBay ~8 years ago. scope

The Chrysler 1970-72 Collision Parts catalog also shows NO 1972 fender engine "call-out" decals shock it also doesn't show any hood/fender Road Runner "tank tracks". (& the are NOT on the hood page/section either)

The driver's side of the FE5 GTX was original paint, it's a 60K mile car out of Idaho.

It looks like the FE5 fender also had blackout below the rocker molding....Do you believe that is original?
Looks like it was painted after the rocker clips were installed.

So, are you putting the call outs on that car?

Yes & Yes (already purchased from PCG thumbs) - the owner took a pic of that fender this morning for me, I can check it out on Monday for more confirmation.

blush stolen from Hamtramck-Historical up when was this published?

I just wonder how the timing of: NO more GTXs, NO more 440-6bbls - a car "scheduled" 3-1/2 weeks into production of the new model year, on a Saturday ..... hidden, I mean sent off to ASC for a sunroof conversion - just how exactly did someone make that happen?

I think the engine call out refers to the fact that the 400 engine decal on the rr hood had no numbers on it. It was blank

Re: 1972 Road Runner fender engine callout - 11/01/15 12:42 AM

Good evidence there. Does not specifically say on fender but can we assume if they could not put it on the hood they would put it on the fender?

Moved to behind the wheel opening for 72 per the factory document.

Those engine callouts are for a 71? And why dont they show in any parts book?

Re: 1972 Road Runner fender engine callout - 11/01/15 04:04 PM

71 and 72. The factory document was created for 71 but updated for 72 (look at the revisions at the bottom). If you notice the text under "view in circle Y" it indicates "typical 2/M-23 location" meaning 72 M-23.

No, that's the 440 sunroof car. The gold stripe was added (and the air grabber painted gold) at some time.

Good to see a engineering document showing it to be there! Thank you. Curious that is shows use white decals with E5 and both E5 cars pictured in this thread have black decals...

Actually, I believe both cars pictured in this thread are EV2 (at least I know the white top sunroof car is).

I noticed in one of the other threads that are up on this car in the engine picture it appears your using a reproduction dipstick and have it painted Black. Based on what I know from back in the day and on my 72 400 car's the dipsticks are shaped differently than currently reproduced and were dipped in Orange paint to match the Air Cleaner.
You can reference this old auction of an NOS piece to see what I'm saying.
Hope this helps

Ron, Thanks for mentioning that....I will do some research and change it. I had done a 74 RR with a 400 and it was black. I always am open to critiques and in the end I want to do the best job possible!!
Anyone else have an orange handle on their blue engine?

Here is my Current 72 Satellite 400 auto.
Besides the Orange dip the shape on an original or NOS is totally different than current reproductions.

Happy to read this about engine call outs.
Over the years noticed inconsistent decal placement on these cars.
Glad to see in print that the standard engines cars had NO external call-out.
I think it annoys many 383 and 400 owners that the "little" 340 got call outs, but their cars didn"t!

Here is a 72 RR GTX restored by the McGlauphlans way several years back. It was featured as a "reference restoration" by mopar action magazine. Not the greatest picture, but if you can find an old back issue (i know I have it somewhere) it should have allot of detail items.

Its a 4spd, dana, console car.

In 71, the standard 383 cars did get callouts. For 72 the standard 400 did not.

I saw that car in person at the Atlantic City Auction last Feb. Still looks very nice but needs TLC underhood.
It has been shopped around a bunch the past few years.
