lost track on rolled ebody fender rules - 03/03/15 06:16 AM

I am getting my 70 cuda convert fenders restored, and wonder if I should take out the roll that is on them. The car did come with the chrome trim. fenders are rolled, and the chrome is so screwed up, I don't know what was right with it from day 1.

It is a 15" factory wheel car, with a 340, born in feb 70. I know it likely came with the E size tires, but need to check the docs again.

please help, so I can tell the body guy to restore the lip or not, by bending it back without the roll (maybe).

a recent thread on Challenger fenders

Can you post a couple pics of both of your "rolled fenders" w/wheel lip mouldings?

The car came with 2 sets of wheel lip moldings (maybe for restoration later), not sure which was original. I think both we cut out, they are somewhere stashed in the garage.

The fenders are at the shop, they are rolled maybe for more than 6 inches I have seen posted once, as what I thought they were supposed to be.

All I am looking for, are what are the rules for a standard early 70 car with 15 inch wheels. My speculation is only hemi cars got them, and if so, just need to be told that, and I will have the fenders restored the right way. What is on the car now, likely is the result of big ass tires put on the cars front over the years (heck the back has H series). I speculate a F series upgrade over the E series would force someone to roll those fenders, and I bet that happened.

Here is one picture I have of the car in 74 (car still has those rear tires on it). I don't have the old tires that were on the front, as they were scrapped before I saw them. I speculate when he put on those Gillette H series, he did not whimp out with E series on front, and had to do something with the wheel lips. dang bike is in the way. Now on the other hand, I don't see a monster front tire bulging out though either, as you see the shadow in the that front wheel well. Only 2 sets of tires were ever on that car.

Also, are we sure early convertibles did not get special treatment? I just found out, this car showed up at a baxter dealership in Omaha Nebraska, built in the same month (feb), as a hemi 4 spd convertible (plum crazy purple, the infamous paint job car). That's pretty cool trivia. Maybe the factory that made them the same way when it came to fenders? totally guessing here. I mean, they put torque boxes on converts, maybe they treated these cars differently up front if they were a cuda convert? By feb 70, I doubt they built that many cuda converts with 15 inch wheels (maybe 50-100 cars is a guess). It was viewed as a performance car, an upgrade to the stock barracuda. Totally reaching.

I wonder how "close" your car is compared to the FC7 HEMI 'vert, do you have the b'cast sheet? Are you saying it was at the same dealership or from the same "area"?

Pictures of the current "roll" would get more opinions as to whether they are factory rolled or done after the fact, but it appears by February they had the fender/trim clearance issue combinations figured out.

IMO, a Feb. '70 340 'Cuda convertible with 15x7.0" wheels and E60-15 Polyglas GTs SHOULD have "normal" fenders with wheel lip mouldings.

yep, my car was at the same dealership and built same time.
both feb 70 converts shipped to same dealer. I got the window sticker and buildsheet.

I am pretty sure now, my car is not a factory rolled fender car. I read a few more things out there. and if it truly a E size tire, it would not need the roll.

I am going to restore it as it was supposed to be.

1970 is the year of the fix on these fenders. 1971, I owned a 383 four speed Cuda November 1970 built had the rolled fenders and wheel well trim. My brother inlaw owned a 1971 Cuda 383 auto 14 inch tires from the factory and those fenders were rolled and the cuda had wheel well trim. Not sure if in 1971 that all fenders on Cudas and Barracudas were rolled or just the Cudas. I did own 1970 440-6 Cuda four speed with rolled fenders no trim but it is long gone to look at.

Give 6bblgt as much of your information from your car as you can so he can amass the data from plenty of cars and come up with a time line for all the different fenders rolled or not.

finding it hard to believe these would not be original hemi fenders. Shouldn't there be a trim hole in the middle of that span?
They are everywhere else on the lip.
Original fender, original fender molding car.

these are detailed pics, if you click on them you can see more resolution.

If you have a broadcast sheet for the car, is it coded for wheel lip moldings?

Hi Barry, I'll go check later. Is there an explicit box for that? I just assumed it was a wheel molding car, as all the pics I have for it in original paint have those moldings. But yes, need to confirm.
I got some of the moldings and I know some of them were hacked (or looked that way to me).

It got a 6 in the box.

Is there something I should look at for suspension or brakes or...

Does the car still have its door decal, is it dated "2-1970"?
Do you have access to the K-frame? Can you check the date on it? 0330 1 ??

The 'roll' job looks pretty crude to me. I suspect that someone removed your original moldings to modify the fenders at some point.

For what its worth, my friends original 70 hemi cuda has the wheel lips like mine. The fold of the metal starts right after one of the molding holes, includes the middle hole, and comes back to original for the next molding hole. Original owner car, never hit in front. December 1969 build on his car. I did notice some ripples along the fold in his, I did not feel on mine.

I am just going to leave the fenders alone. I have spoken to a few owners of 340 cars with 15 inch wheels, and although some of their cars are gone, they remember the fender lips being folded.

His looks no less cruder than mine.
