Pistol grip shifting issue - 09/29/14 07:43 AM
Having a issue with the shifter hitting the console in my e body. This happens in 2nd. And 4th gear. Also it is very tight to shift. Is this a linkage adjustment, or will rebuilding the shifter be the fix?
The console was moved all the way back but still hits, it seems like the throw is too long, along with the tightness issue.
Any help is appreciated.

Linkage adjustment, no. How close is it to the front of the opening ? Maybe you put the levers on the trans on backwards?

That can be a worn transmission mount.
It drops the transmission a bit lower and pulls the shifter with it. It don't take much.

The shifter has room on the forward position.
I wouldn't see how the tranny mount would cause this, do you mean the shifter mount to the tranny?
Can the rods be interchanged and make it shift like this?
Would that also cause the stiff shifting?

Check the shifter mounting plate for movement. It's the diamond-shaped plate that mounts to your transmission, and your shifter mounts to it. The bolts on mine worked their way loose once and my shifter hit the console in 2nd and 4th.

It is the original shifter and console, car was sitting for 30 years, so shifter could be questionable.
I am not sure where the shifter is sitting, in the hole, other then at the shop with no one to take the time to troubleshoot it properly. So all suggestions I will have to forward to them.
I will have them look at the mounting to make sure it is right.

Take Grizzly's advice before paying $100/hr to rebuild the entire car. Then the shifter mount bolts.

Sorry about that, I'll explain it a little better: It's the transmission to crossmember mount you are looking at. After they take years of supporting all that weight hitting every bump in the road, the rubber pounds and mushes out. It only takes a fraction of an inch at the mount to make a big difference up top at the shifter. You can have a helper go under there with prybar and pry up on the transmission while you watch from in the car and see how much difference it makes. Would that also cause the stiff shifting?
The grease in your shifter is all dried up and full of dirt.
It's a tedious job, but just pull the whole Hurst mechanism apart, clean it, grease it all, and put it back together. Take lots of pictures while you are doing it and try to stack everything in the order it came apart. I've done it, it's a piece of cake. 
Made a huge difference.
That must be the reason why the later shifters have a grease nipple on them.

Are you sure you have a correct 4spd console and top plate vs auto ?

Are there parts that usually require replacing when I tear this down? Or just clean it up and rebuild.
Also what finish if I choose to replate.
