Strato-Vent, houndstooth, AM/FM/cassette, power winders...

Is that a real R-code sunroof car???

We had one very close to that with us at a local cruise last Sun...

FE-5, white interior/vinyl, U-code...

And a sunroof...

Yes. As with most sunroof cars, it's pretty loaded.

Hidden headlights too. I posted the tag.

This one is the automatic.

You mean 71 Charger hemi sunroofs?

There's a 71 Hemi Super Bee 4spd bench seat car owned by a So Cal collector.

Off Topic: I just saw a 69 383 Charger sunroof being turned into a protourning car. BB supercharged, tubbed, fabbed suspension. Car was tan/tan/tan 383 4bbl, loaded with options. They are going to leave the factory sunroof and power windows in it.

Re: cool sunroof hemi 71 charger r/t in-progress pics - 08/10/14 11:15 PM

No, I meant Hemi 71 Chargers. That sunroof was an expensive option for a go-fast car.

$500.00 for an electric hole in the roof...

Hemi and a sunroof, you were looking at over a thou added to the sticker...

Re: cool sunroof hemi 71 charger r/t in-progress pics - 08/10/14 11:26 PM

Exactly: Back then the price of the Hemi itself strained the budget of most buyers. Thats why a lot of Hemi cars were pretty bare except for the big Kahuna under the hood. Then there's the extra weight of those options.
That's just why I am surprised there are so many of them.

Well, in 1971 you could only get the Hemi in a convertible if you bought a 71 Hemi 'Cuda.

And no B-body convertibles at all in 1971. No Hemi or Six Pack Challenger convertibles in 1971.

71 Charger R/T's were expensive upscale mid sized cars. They offered a TON of options with those cars. I'm thinking the few guys that had the money to pay the big bucks for the hemi in 1971 had extra bucks. Hemi sales were really down in 1971 and economy was down too. The buying audience is more narrowed down to die hards and well funded buyers. Not people that could barely afford the hemi.

Here's the 71 EV2 hemi Charger Super Bee with bench seat and power windows at Spring Fling 2012

Yes, Hideaways.

Also, remember that not all hemi cars were sold in US and Canada. These were Super Cars and had a global recognition. And not just France either. The 4sp Hemi Charger R/T sunroof xx29 is working on is an export car that will not pop up on any production list I believe?

I just heard of an export Hemi 71 'Cuda hardtop that is optioned beast of breed level.

Hideaways on the 71 Super Bee next to a pretty darn cool Hemi Challenger at Spring Fling 2012.

Re: cool sunroof hemi 71 charger r/t in-progress pics - 08/11/14 12:46 AM

I believe another factor is that halfway through the year everyone knew there would not be any 72 Hemis so perhaps a few got really optioned by buyers that knew this was the last kick at the cat. Still though it was hard for people back then to justify loaded New Yorker or maybe bottom line Imperial money on a midsize car. Back then if you paid a lot of money you expected a large luxury car.

It creates a sense of urgency. And sometimes that can get people stirred up to buy something they normally would not buy.

IIRC, A lot of these loaded cars were built after halfway through the model year.

If you were to see the Buildsheet on most of these Hemi Sunroof cars
I would bet they were ordered by the dealer for stock & not sold orders. I could see a sales manager or dealer principal stepping up
to have a attention getting stock unit. Especially if they were told
of the discontinued Hemi for 72.

1971 Charger R/T Hemi Orange/White/White 426/Auto (Segal/Wellborn)

1971 Charger R/T Bright Red/Black/Black 426/Auto (This Post)

1971 Super Bee Hemi Orange/White/White 426/4-spd (SoCal car)

There's a white hemi super bee with a very questionable fender tag. Ramcharger mentioned that car in this post.

Ramcharger is that the car you remember (and others) as a kid in British Columbia? Does the current owner say the car was from canada? Does the tag show it?

Other hemi 71 sunroof chargers?... Looking at history of them coming to surface, good chance of a dead/crushed one(s) or one(s) still out there. Or at least a Plymouth one.

Yes, owner took liberties with that one! Shame if it was a true car and was re-bodied and tagged like that.

There are two 71 Plymouth Hemi sunroof cars that I know of. One is the Wellborn GTX that has been in the magazines in the past couple of years. There is a Roadrunner out there that is slated to be restored. GB5 426/4 spd sunroof car.

Interesting note also - I don't have any 1971 Charger/Super Bee Six-Pack sunroof cars on my list. I have a couple of V code 1971 Plymouths - The FJ6 GTX car that was at 2011 Carlisle, and another V-code sunroof car that I am not at liberty to discuss yet.

I haven't seen the fendertag on this white Bee, is it a St.Louis built car? Those had "funky" fendertags with option codes that you normally don't see on Lynch Road or L.A. built cars. Did they add options to this tag/car? Does someone know the car it was rebodied?

It came from the factory in orange and white top/white interior with rubber bumpers.

The photo above shows the car in its original condition as when I pulled it out of storage in 1988. It still had its original paint at the time but it was terrible looking. I had it scuffed and repainted in 1991. The original paint was so badly applied at the factory and so thin that people would insult the car when I brought it to shows. There was almost no paint (just primer) on the firewall and lower inner fenders. The paint on the rear valance was just a continuous series of drip marks and runs - like they tried to chase the run to the bottom when it was still wet. The passenger quarter even had a big hunk of lead in it where they must have dripped it down when they were doing the original roof seams. They just smeared it around instead of removing it, and then just painted over it. it looked just horrible, and it was the size of a dinner plate.

Thanks njsteve - I got confused, my fault. I thought you had posted an original pic of the FE5 car that started this post. Your pic is the EV2/V1W Hemi sunroof R/T. Got it! Thanks again. Scott.
