1971 dual snorkel paint - 07/31/14 04:55 PM

Were the '71 big block dual snorkels painted with a wrinkle finish or just regular paint? I have seen them restored both ways. I need to properly refinish the one I have for a Sept 11, '70 SPD GTX, that was built in the LA plant.

Ive never seen anything on a 70 other than wrinkle paint on the dual snorkel piece.

I know thats not the expert slam dunk answer youre looking for, but..........!

Do you have an early '71 model year air cleaner without the "hump" on the passenger side snorkel?

I've seen both wrinkle and smooth on original 71 dual snorkel cleaners.

When I did my OE Cert 71 GTX, I talked this over with Roger Gibson. The original air cleaner on that car was smooth and most people told me that it was incorrect.

When we went through Roger's extensive collection of photos, we came to the conclusion that the Plymouths were more likely to have the smooth finish and the Dodge's were more likely to have the wrinkle finish. I don't remember what the Chryslers had.

But there were exceptions both ways.

While I will agree that there are variations that may be plant specific - there is NO WAY!! it was model specific.

I have no interest in arguing with you about it. Frankly, it doesn't even matter to me any more. I am just telling you how the numbers stacked up. Magnum engines had noticeably more wrinkle paint occurrences while the Commandos usually had smooth.

I have 3 71 GTX's over the years. 1 was original wrinkle paint, the other 2 standard paint. The VINs all were in the middle of the run. Though I can't say they were all the original air cleaners, the all did have 71 versions with the wraparound hose on them.

I have a copy of the 71 GTX Test Drive car, and it was wrinkle with a correct for 71 style cleaner.

I looked at an orange survivor 71 GTX with AC and allot of options at the mopar nats around 10 or so years ago, and it was smooth black. Other than a repaint, car was all original.

DAn- I have the '71 dual snork w/o the hump style on the pass side. It appears to have always been smooth paint, but it is not the original air cleaner to my X. Would anyone happen to have an early '71 LA build car?

Thanks for the help so far
