Date codes for the 1970 model year - complete list? - 05/06/14 05:37 AM

Hey guys,
I am working on another article for HH. I have access to a very original car that was built a bit early, in the month prior to the scheduled production date on its fender tag. Looking at the date codes on it so far has been fun & I have started a spreadsheet to track them.

Not all of the possibilities listed below have been checked on this car yet, but I have seen them on other 1970 model year cars. If you know of something not shown, please mention it so I can add it to the list and / or check it on this car.

I will edit the list as more possibilities are reported.

Thanks!

Barry

Convertible boot cover date and manufacture stamp.

Early cars have different.

Not date codes but related. Early car, see if the body panels have vendor codes or all zeros.

OK, updated again.

I may have called something by a different name, as an example "upholstery' was on the list as "Seat upholstery".

Thanks guys!

Hi Guys, Have a question. Have a 71 Satellite Pilot Car with a bunch of 000000 on front fenders. What do they mean if anything and can they be found on cars built later in the year? Thanks Terry

Re: Date codes for the 1970 model year - complete list? - 05/08/14 04:23 AM

The sheet metal on pilot cars were often all zeros, likely because they had not been 100% accepted as production ready, and or, were not yet assigned a number by the metal stamping vendor or Chrysler. As far as I know there is no "decode" available for these numbers once chosen, just something for Chrysler and the vendor to use to I.D. or track them (I'm guessing here).

Not 100% sure, but I believe that the diodes in the alternator were also date coded.

Well, are we disassembling the car? Cause if that's the case I can expand my list dramatically.......Seems silly though.

Seems silly that people look for date coded heads, something no one will see,but if it helps them sleep better, bles there heart!

Re: Date codes for the 1970 model year - complete list? - 05/10/14 03:42 AM

I agree, but for some reason a lot of people do (care about the dates on heads, Hemi especially). If someone is building an engine that might be sold away from a car casting dates are more likely to be important to, and inspected by, a buyer, where as if being used or sold in a complete car, it seems usually less important. Go figure

Re: Date codes for the 1970 model year - complete list? - 05/10/14 04:16 AM

To me, it is interesting to record the history of an original car. Folks ask all the time,
"What is the build date of my car?".

There is no way to know for the 1970 model year, among others.

The car has a March date on on the Mylar door sticker, so I know that for sure. The 'newest' date code I have seen on the parts so far is March 23rd, so I have a date range that it was possibly built.

If the details narrow the gap from the 23rd to the 31st along the line it means nothing in the big scheme of things, but I am having fun looking into it.

On hidden dates like ring gears & heads I am not going to open the car up to check them unless a mechanical fix is needed at some point.
