'65 Dodge grilles SUCK! - 04/01/14 11:20 PM

All the little" teeth" are a pain in the rear to get straight and polished!

This one had quite a few bumps and bruises when I started...

and you're right they do let a lot of air in for radiator and the intake, definitely SUCKS in a good way

Nice job

Here is the headlight surround.

It had lots of little dents around the perimeter and some deep scratches on the outside edge.

I've started masking off the black to be painted but wow, what a job.

Starting to think an airbrush might be the way to go?

I've got a '65 Satellite grille and headlight doors I need to get started on refinishing…. I'm comfortable straightening, sanding, buffing and polishing, but..

…may I ask you to share your method of stripping the anodizing off before you start polishing? I tried oven cleaner and it was... well… less than a success.

Much obliged,

You should be selling "NOS" parts on ebay.

Nice work!

Heavy Duty Easy Off.

Make sure it's warm when you do it.

The fume free doesn't work.

How did you paint yours, maxwagon? I did my 63 330 grille paint but the headlight surrounds on the 65 are much more complicated to mask...

sodium hydroxide...Lye...is what you want to strip the anodizing..Most local hardware stores carry the chrystalized stuff in a plastic bottle used for a heavy duty drain cleaner/opener...I made up a throw-away container out of a cardboard box and some heavy plastic...Big enough to do the 65 dodge grille and some trim...

I taped off the headlight bezels with "fine line" plastic tape for the striped areas... Worked great... I'll get some pics of the finished product and post them later...

So after removing the anodizing you don't have to do any treatment or anything.. Just polish and keep up with it. Anodizing was just to protect the aluminum . I appreciate the help just don't want to screw up my trim if I do this.

The grille in my '63 330 has been done for 5+ years and still looks good.

It is garaged 99% of the time, though.

If the car is going to sit out in the weather you could always have it re-anodized.

Here's a close-up of the headlight bezel...Polished out and taped off with fineline tape...Lots of masking with the 65 grille...

Last one...A side shot...As stated the aluminum trim seems to hold up very well without the annodizing on it... I've done quite a few and all the trim needs is a little TLC from time to time... On a side note I ended up with rechromed front and rear bumpers on this one...Got the B/E&A trunk medallion...Beautiful piece of craftsmanship from Mike and it really made the back end..
