Shaker Bubble (Cold/Warm Air Door Cable)

Shaker Bubble (Cold/Warm Air Door Cable) - 02/02/14 06:07 AM

Can someone tell me how the cable is supposed to be attached to the rear point on the underside of the bubble (see annotated photo)? It looks to me like the cable is held in place with a hex head tapping screw and washer. The cable is just sandwiched between the washer and the mounting point. Is that correct? Thanks.

Yes, crude and it usually didn't do a very good job staying put.

Thanks Scott. I suspected that would probably be the answer. So, how large should the washer be?

I remember correctly it's between 3/4"-1" or so. I measured this one but can't locate the pc at the moment, this one is original, never removed. Also, quite thin, it bent pretty easily when the screw was tightened, almost like a tin piece of sheet metal as oppsed to a stamped steel washer.

Great! Thanks for the help Scott. I found (and saved) the same photo you posted. I'll figure something out. At least now I know the approximate size of the washer. Not necessarily looking to do what was done "originally", just need to do something that is effective.

The Fram employee associated with these assemblies told me once when asked about the washer, that the washer was used on all scoops in the beginning and was supposed to be deleted 10-30-69 as per blueprint, but some units continued to be assembled with the washer.
The washers' function was to keep the cable in place as they were notorious for slipping out of the grooved boss and flopping around making it hard to thread through the adapter opening spot.
Later a wax colored tape was used sometimes to do the same job, and occasionally along with the washer, as a trace of tape is possibly seen on Scotts pictured scoop.
I have seen that as well on some scoops but the tape never held and most times broke away.

Here's another photo I found. The washer used on this bubble for the cable looks larger than the washers in the other two photos. I know my bubble is an original, but there is no hole drilled in the spot where the screw/washer secures the the cable at the rear. I'm gonna drill it and use the hardware.

Personally, I wouldn't drill yours if it didn't have it, just add the tape and let it go. It's original after all...

Thanks for the advice Scott. I'll certainly consider not drilling.
