E-Body Stainless Windshield Trim? - 01/01/14 05:29 AM

Can anyone share any info regarding the exterior stainless trim for the "top" of the windshield? Specifically, when I took mine off, I noticed remnants of adhesive foam on the backside of the trim. Does anyone know anything about this? What was the width and thickness? I think I'll need to acquire some foam stripping and apply before reinstalling. BTW - would this have been used on the backside of any other stainless windshield trim? Thanks.

This is for a convertible E-body I suspect?

Is the the very top header panel stainless were the convertible top meets the windshield frame or the stainless that surrounds and touches the windshield glass?

IIRC, I've seen little strips of black foam under some e-body hardtop windshield moldings. About 1/2" to 1" long. Aveco sold/sells a roll of foam strip like that. Don't know if they still sell it.

Here are some pictures from mine after I removed the stainless trim. You can see the foam which is glued to the body, not the trim.

My Challenger is a convertible, but it's my understanding that the windshields and the exterior stainless trim surround were the same for hard-tops. ALL the exterior windshield trim is stainless, including where the convertible top meets the very top header.

Thanks for all the info/help Larry. The photos and diagrams are very helpful. Diagrams are difficult to decipher though. So, was there foam on the exterior of the A-pillars as well?

I posted the only pictures I have of my car (it is in storage now as we have moved). I don't think the foam ran down the A-pillars, rather it stopped where it is in my picture. I don't recall looking at the back side of the stainless either to see if it had foam on it.

Sorry no idea on the foam thickness at present. Here is another picture showing the foam termination on the a-pillar.

I thought just the stainless touching around the window itself including the lower cowl was the same?? Just those pieces though.

And with E-bodies can you cut the side plastic A-piller for a hardtop to make it work for a convertible?? Like you can on A and B bodies??

I think so (and I hope so since the passenger side one in my car broke when I took it off - it was covered in leather so I didn't see it had a crack, and a previous owner had glued it to the pillar). The top is not visible, the convertible has a small *metal* trim corner up there, over the top of the pillar molding.
Stamping small metal parts was cheaper than making a plastic mould, so that convertible-specific part got made in metal while the pillar trim was just a cut-up hardtop version. If Chrysler had tooled up for a plastic version, there would have been no need for the metal corner.

I think you're right, windshield trim and windshield-to-cowl trim are not convertible-specific.
That huge two-part header trim is. A-Pillar trim looks like what was on the Daytonas, but are probably different.

What would be the purpose of that foam? Preventing water from entering through the header?
I did have a problem with that in my car, but the only remnants of foam I found were on the back of the trim.
If it's a water protection, then it should be compressed by the trim to form a barrier.

I can't think of another use.

My 68 Dart also had foam under that trim. Contact DMT...they probably have a foam kit available.

The op was kinda vague. Those stainless pieces are the convertible specific pieces I was talking about...The "inner" exterior trim is the same but the way it reads is just the front stainless around the windshield when both sets of stainless are around it. The plastic a-pillar trim can be modified to work on the inside but the rest across the top is all different....
