67 GTX 4 speed differential question - 12/19/08 10:13 PM

Was it standard for a 67 GTX 440 4 speed to come with a Dana? If so, what where the common gears found in them?

Thanks, I thought so. Now I'm off to the parts wanted section.

Yes, DANA 60 & 3.54:1 (the only available gear ratio)

3:54 Standard, Scott it's actually 2:34 PDT (Pacific Daylight Time)

They had 10.1 compression too

Was the 18 spline trans standard too? This is my first pre '68 mopar

Re: 67 GTX 4 speed differential question - 12/19/08 11:14 PM

Yes, the only combo's available in a 67 GTX were:

440 or 426 Hemi

All 4 speed cars came standard with a 3.54 Dana 60, all 4 speed cars came with 18 Spline Hemi 4 speed transmissions.

All automatics came standard with an 83/4 rear, you could not order a Dana in an automatic car in 1967.

BTW, a quick way to see if it's got a correct Dana without checking the SO number is to look for a drain plug in the bottom of the rear end case, after about mid year 68 the plug was eliminated. Also, 1967 was the last year that the VIN was not stamped on the engine or trans so the trans case will not have a raised pad for the number, 1968 and later transmissions had the raised pad on the passenger side.

1967 GTX

86 - 440HP 4bbl - STD
395 - auto trans (727) - STD

393 - 4-speed (18 spline H.D.) - no-charge option
but required GTX ONLY w/393
408 - H.D. differential (DANA 60 w/3.54 gears & sure-grip) - $138.90

A buddy of mine has a 67 18 spline trans if you need one.

Thanks for the info on the drain plug Scott. My 68 has it. Even though it's tagged 3.54, "somehow" a 4.10 screw found it's way in there during the rebuild.

A '68 differential is about 1/2" wider than a '66-'67. So the "drain plug" approach is not the entire story, just one part.

6pak,

yea I know, but it will be a good place to start, if it has the plug it's pretty likely the original, but by no means definate without checking the BOM#.

Not always true, this is a pic of the original transmission case from my 1967 Satellite built on 6-06-67 and has the vin pad and no vin stamped into it, just a date code.

Being near the end of production I would see that as possible, but it's a rarity for sure, in fact that's one of the few I've seen. Can you post a pic of the pad close and clear? Does it have the aluminum assembly tag on the cover side?

Re: 67 GTX 4 speed differential question - 12/22/08 07:53 PM

I will have to pull it out of storage to get a pic of the pad.
I will try to get one tonight.

I don't remember seeing any tags on the cover side, I will look for that too.

It suprised me too, when I picked the car up from the swamp it was in I found the trans laying in the mud about 100 feet from the car in pieces. I saw the vin pad and figgured it was a 68 trans.
When I hit it with break cleaner I could see the number stamp. I looked it up to see what it was from I realized it was the original trans for the car.

The 1967 18 spline transmission will have the small front input bearing and retainer as well.

I haven't forgot yet, just haven't had a chance to get the pics. I did stop and look at it but I didn't have the camera with, I was wrong about the date stamp. The pad wasn't even machined flat and I didn't notice a aluminum tag on the cover side.

Yes, 3:54 Standard

Also Chrysler had a supporting program for swapping out the Dana center pieces for different ratios @ the dealer level. In my 67 Mopar Hemi purchased new I had the dealer install a 4.10 instead of the factory-installed 3.54. I think the take-out 3.54 piece was then dropped off into their national parts system...

Just my $0.02...

What would the BOM# be for a '67 GTX? I can't seem to find anything prior to '68 calender year.
